SkyWatch Friday #55 Mad, bad and dangerous to know

There was a terrific noise over our house on Thursday. We're used to aircraft en route from Heathrow Airport and military helicopters from various military bases around but this aircraft was incredibly noisy. At first I thought it was a 'see your house from the air' endeavour as the noise was circling the area. I grabbed my binoculars and went outside to discover a Police helicopter prowling. The siren hadn't sounded so I knew no-one had taken 'French leave' from the high-security pyschiatric hospital attached to this village - it takes an hour to search the grounds if one of the inmates has gone missing so the security services don't become active until after that. I took photographs as the helicopter clattered about overhead and eventually disappeared. Shall we ever know what was happening?

I do know that I would be chary of travelling in one of these aircraft - it didn't sound very 'sound' - but as I'm unlikely to be invited onto one as a passenger I shall not worry unduly.

As you can see the skies were busy building up interesting clouds and we have had much rain since - good for the soil, good for the skin - or so we're told (but you can have too much of a good thing . . . ;-[)

  1. Great shots! There was a really noisy helicopter over our house yesterday -- it finally went away, too, but seemed to take its time. Does look like rainy time -- we're having the opposite in Seattle and it's very unusual!

    Enjoy your weekend!

  2. Wonderful skies you have here.
The choppers do make a lot of noise passing. We share the same air traffic and I often wonder what is amiss.
Your last cloud picture is glowing with light from the centre.

  3. Funnily enough, we had the air ambulance helicopter hovering over the village and landing in the playing field earlier this week. I never did find out who they attended.

  4. Helicopters are sure noisy despite their sizes.... good capture of this one against that cloudy sky!

  5. Being situated so close to two air bases, we also see plenty of aircraft. Never seen one of these though. In fact, I don't think we even have them up here!

Sorry to see your clouds have been bringing you way too much rain. This end of the country has been much luckier. (You could always move!)

  6. Yup ... we get noisy helicopters hovering and circling often. I hate it most in the middle of the night. Seems like a huge waste of money to me along with being an annoyance. We've not seen clouds like that in a long time. Nice sky shots ;--)
    Hugs and blessings,

  7. Those are some intense clouds. I live near an Air Base too. Lots of planes and helicopters overhead here.

  8. Looks like your skies were not very far from my skies ... I agree: far too much of a good thing! I got so wet more than once.

  9. Hi thanks for your visit.
You asked about the apple tree.
Its a Discovery apple, all our neigbours love this time of the year, when we ask them to help them selves to the fruit. It all comes at once.
Its lovely tasting and while an eater it also cooks well.
There is a plum tree near it so again we ask neigbours to help us out.Have a good weekend.

  11. Exciting and scary. Not at all what we would have here. Just shows you too, you never know when that photo op will appear. Well done for quick thinking.

  13. I have known people who have gone up in helicopters but never had the opportunity myself. I think - maybe - I would like to try but well....

    Great SWF post!
