Friday 55 Flash Fiction Racing

His eyes narrowed as he concentrated on negotiating the hairpin bends on the world-famous racing circuit. He needed to keep a clear head – victory was close yet one small miscalculation could result in defeat.
Suddenly, a voice interrupted his thoughts. 'Teatime,' called his mother. He sighed and clambered onto his chair.

  7. What is a locum and what is the NHS? I can kind of guess, but wouldn't mind confirmation.

  8. Sorry Alice - I was going to explain as I went along but didn't want to seem condescending. A locum is a doctor employed to cover out-of-hours work - a sort of 'supply' or 'stand-in' doctor. One killed a patient with a huge accidental painkiller overdose a couple of years ago. The NHS is the National Health Service, for which all British taxpayers pay even if they opt to have private medical insurance. Some knock the NHS but it's very good for the serious ailments in life.

  9. I thought it was something like that, but appreciate the explanation. It didn't come across as condescending in the least.
