ABC Wednesday Round 6 H is for Herons

There is a small colony of Grey Herons in our local nature reserve.
Now I know where individuals come from to visit our garden pond and take our fish!
Though their main food is fish herons will also eat amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, ducklings and other small birds as well as insects, snails and worms.
Thanks must go to the ABC Wednesday team which organises and hosts this meme.

  2. i love herons, lucky that you have them near you! I saw a roost of Great Egrets last night, and there are usually night herons at the marsh here, but I haven't seen them lately. Great post and photos!

  4. I love herons so much that I have forgiven them for eating every last fish from my pond.

  6. I love herons as well. We saw sweveral up close a couple of years ago in Vancouver and I was able to get up quite close to get some good shots!

  7. We so seldom see herons, not having much marshland in this semi desert, - a real treat to see your photos.

  8. Herons are so interesting. I assumed they ate fish only - they have a varied diet, for sure. Nice to learn.

  9. That looks like the Everglades! We have tons of wading birds, herons included. (My favorite is the anhinga ... although technically they are divers.)

  10. Beautiful post! We have herons around here, too - and a fish pond. We built it raised and strung wires below the surface at the front edge so that they can't wade in and it does seem to deter them.

  12. I disturbed a heron down on the river near us. I had my camera with me but all I got was a blur! I appreciate yours so much more after that.

  14. Herons always look so serious and have that posture that I irreverantly refer to as the Richard Nixon stance.
    Nice 'H's!

  16. Lovely photos of your heron. I haven't seen one in a while but that last one I watched it fish for a good half hour as I sat on the edge of a large pond. Fascinating birds.

  17. Lovely photographs. Herons are always a wonderful sight, I love them. I remember going to a hydro power site in south west Scotland which had salmon ladders and that was the local herons favourite spot; although the guy that worked there said it rarely managed to catch any and seemed to live mostly on eels from the river.

  18. Beautiful shots of the Heron. Recently I had to collect pictures of birds for each alphabet for his school work. This bird was there in his list.

  19. Very nice shots of the grey heron! We have blue herons here (once they migrate north) and I'm forever trying to get good shots of them. Are grey herons less shy?

    (Sorry they eat your fish!)
