ABC Wednesday E is for Exochorda

Exochorda is native to China and central Asia and is a pretty deciduous shrub with arching branches. It bears pure white flowers.
The buds resemble pearls, which give rise to its common name of ‘The Pearl Bush’.
It is also known as ‘The Bride’ because when the flowers are fully open and covering the shrub, the effect is of a bridal gown, a froth of white.
We planted one of these a few years ago and it is always a delight to see its full effect in April and May. It contrasts well with the deep blue of the evergreen Ceanothus.

  1. Oh, how pretty! I've never heard of this plant before, and wonder if I've ever seen any and just didn't know what I was looking at. Even its foliage is lovely! Does it have a fragrance (in other words, is the bride wearing perfume?) :-)

It reminds me of Spirea (aka "Bridalwreath"), which flourishes and is very popular down in town and which I really enjoy seeing in the spring, but that would have its botanical butt kicked up here where we live. :-(

  2. This is a new one for me, but it would be exciting to see it come into bloom in the spring.

  4. It's fairly likely that I've seen this pretty flower, but I can't say I've paid it much attention. Now seeing your lovely shots, I'll have to look for it come spring.

  5. Lovely flowering bush...the flowers sort of remind me of the cherry blossoms we see around here in the springtime.

  9. It's gorgeous, Janice. I doubt if it would survive in Alberta, though. Too bad!
