ABC Wednesday P is for . . .

. . . Pansies almost all the year round.
. . . Petunias with their velvety petals. The palest colours have the strongest scent. To encourage continuous flowering in these summer annuals the dead heads should be removed. The sap is very sticky.
. . . Pelargoniums come in a variety of reds from scarlet and crimson to peach and pink and white. They are grown as annuals in our temperate climate and are easily propagated from cuttings. Some people dislike the scent of geraniums – I think the strong pungent smell is wonderful. Pelargoniums are still flowering in our garden despite a light frost a week ago.
. . . Perennial geranium – otherwise known as cranesbills. There are one or two still hanging on.
. . . Pinks (Dianthus) perennial sweet-scented flowers. There are very few flowers now.
. . . the Pond in our garden supports much wild life including Pond skaters
. . . the Endless Pool is a source of pleasure for all the family.
Pruning – our garden requires quite a lot of pruning. It’s our fault for planting so many shrubs. This year the arches were very overgrown and the flowers not as prolific. Those we had were about ten feet off the ground so we set to  pruning them.  Barry thought I was going to give them a trim but I had warned him I was going to cut them right back. I did this a few years ago and was rewarded with fresh growth and many flowers the following summer. The birds are a little despondent, having lost their shelter temporarily.
Hydrangea Petiolaris was hidden under Clematis 'Pille'.
Some of the prunings can be seen in a heap.

  1. I'm envious that pansies bloom there nearly year round! I have pelargoniums still in bloom but I will have to move them in soon or they will not survive much longer. The pool sounds like a great pleasure indeed!

  2. Particularly pleasant post for P, Janice. Your flowers are beautiful, especially the Pinks, and I've wanted an Endless Pool for years. We have a garage full of junk and I'd love to get rid of it all to put in a pool. It would be such good exercise and not too hard on my aching bits and pieces.

  9. Oh, I love popping in here. Looks like summer to me, even if the temperatures probably are dropping.

Shall have to be sure to post some pictures of the hip-high snow just around the corner. :-) Don't want to be selfish, you know!

  12. Terrific petal photos! Mine will be buried under snow in a couple of days. And will stay that way until June when they'll need replaced. Sigh. The endless pool is fascinating.

  17. A positively perfect preponderance of pretty "P's".

I love the scent of geraniums, all but one of mine are gone for this year. The perennial geranium is my favorite, the bees and bee flies love them.

  19. I love this post,
    it is so pretty.

Your pansies are gorgeous, lovely colours and so are your geraniums.

I have one blue perennial geranium that is on the way out, don't think it will flower for much longer but is a lovely plant.

Lovely post today I have really enjoyed your plants x

  23. I had no luck with petunias this year ! They looked already awful in August. Now I planted some pansies hope they will last at least until my return from Egypt on Nov 17 !

  25. I always find pansies so cheery. Your plants are perfection. Hope pruning efforts will bring forth more flowers next year. The unusually warm weather has certainly extended the season this year.

  27. Beautiful pansies especially. Our geraniums are still blooming and even my plumeria has quite a few blooms on it. We have had some nice warm weather finally but one of our 'winter' storms is on it's way down the coast and we will barely make it to 60 degrees by the weekend. That's January weather for us!

  29. People can say what they want, but I like pansies.

Also, I require directions to your pool. Which airport do I fly into?

  30. Thank you all for your kind comments. Judicious editing of photos gives an entirely false impression of our garden but it does have some lovely things growing in it, despite all obstacles!!
