SkyWatch Friday Season 4 Episode 22

After a bright sunny day when the birds were busily feeding and the sun lit up the trees and shrubs, the early evening sky was clear and cloudless. It will be cold tonight though no frost is expected. Indeed, fog is forecast for tomorrow morning! These photos were taken in my front garden.
There are many catkins on the corkscrew hazel!

Shelley's words are most apt - 'If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?' Shelley - 'Ode to the West Wind' Thank you to the SkyWatch team for organising and hosting this lovely meme.

  8. Me neither. Did not know about corkscrew hazel. Don't know what I like the most: the crazyness of the branches or the name!!

Four good "shapes" images against our skies this week.

Did I tell you that we here in Sydney have just finished our first week of summer?

    *grin*

  13. I love all these shots Janice, but my favourite has to be the silhouette of the trees in the first shot. Does your hazel grow nuts?

  14. I'm right there with everyone else it seems - love the pattern of the corkscrew hazel against the sky!

  17. Those are great photos! I particularly love the corkscrew hazel! I planted one once, but then we moved away and I never saw it grow. :(

  18. Thank you everyone :-)
Yes, our corkscrew hazel produces nuts every year. It's botanical name is Corylus avellanus 'Contorta' and it used to be known as 'Harry Lauder's walking stick'. Harry Lauder (1870 - 1950) was a Scottish singer and entertainer in the variety theatres who always carried a crooked stick for every performance.

  20. You've confirmed the extraordinary power of tree silhouettes against the sky. The simple contrast is like the difference between negative and positive space in good design. Maybe this is where we learnt it! I also now lust after that hazel.

    Beautiful stuff, as usual, Janice.

  21. Intriguing shots of your sky through Contorta! It looks like a rare plant to own to. Thanks for visiting. Re the circus post of mine protesting about the use of lions for entertainment - is it banned in the UK now, I wonder. I have added another skywatch photo for today, waking up to a spectacular sunrise and reflection - having an eastern view from a 10th floor
    is a plus here!

  22. Thank you folks :-)
Margaret - re: circus animals. I was quite convinced that wild animals were not used in UK circuses any longer. I was SO WRONG - they are protected by law but there is no law preventing their use. I'm steamed up about this . . .

  23. Oh lovely shapes against the chilly blue sky. In the first photo, the trees look feathery. Corkscrew hazel - fascinating!
