ABC Wednesday Round 7 A is for amoeba

Appreciative thanks to Denise Nesbitt and her Able Assistants who organise and host this weekly meme. To see more As please click here.

One of the first lessons I remember as an eleven-year-old at my grammar school was biology when we learnt about the Amoeba. I  found it quite fascinating and drew a neat (for me) little illustration in my brand new biology book. It looked a little like the diagram below.

We didn't have live Amoebae to study or films or even slides but the teacher taught clearly and well. Would I have remembered as much or more if video clips had been available? Who can tell!

  1. Hey, welcome back to the fun, Janice! And what a great word for the A day! And, as I wrote to someone else, I always love it when I learn something from the great posts people have. I did, of course, know about amoebas, but I learned some more from the video! Hope you have a great week!

  2. Since I have taught biological subjects, I see from drawing that your teacher did a great job. Video and IT are additional tools and not replacement for traditional teaching.

  3. Now that's neat drawing. Enjoyed that.

  4. Looking at amoeba's under the microscope was such a thrill for me! It was my introduction of the existence of things beyond what we can see.

  5. What an original and interesting post for the letter A.
I think this is going to be a fascinating #7.

  6. Very good drawing! I think good teaching depends on all possible modern and old tools there are but more importantly: the teacher should be enthusiastic and well prepared to teach the subject.

  7. I remember studying about amoeba in high school - but this is fascinating stuff! thanks for sharing!

  8. It's true. The first biology lesson was amoeba too.
    Cool post. Thank you.

  10. I loved biology, but was never able to get any good grades. However hard I studied. And I don't think a video of an amoebe would have helped me out!

  11. Looks like an animated version of Tumblewords fractals!

  12. Your post completely took me back to my school days. I can't say I've ever thought of the word Amoeba since then!

  13. Cool video! I still find amoebas fascinating to watch.

  14. School's a whooooole different experience now, isn't it? It makes me want to go throught it again -- well, almost!

Obviously, I give this post an "A+".
    ;-)

  15. No, you are right we did not have all the gadgets to help with learning. This parasitic protozoa was interesting to watch. My grandson in his 4th year of medicine does still a lot of the drawings himself despite everything available on ipad etc. It helps that he really likes to draw.
I enjoyed your other interesting posts.

  20. I must have slept during biology (during chemistry and physics too) I didn't like that at all in school and maths was the worst ! I have never heard of Amoeba (just looked in my German dictionary) besides the fact that it is a name of a Blogger !

  21. Thanks for your visit, but I have a confession to make:my burglar story was partly made up by me. The end was not true.
    Sorry...

  22. How terrible! I don't remember the lessons on the amoeba. I do have such a horrible memory. I can see that you, on the other hand, have an amazing amount of knowledge you have retained. I do envy you.

  23. That's an interesting and knowledgeable post, very nice post. Thanks for stopping on my blog.

  24. I know I've learned about amoebae. It is somewhere in the very back of my mind. I'm sure I would have remembered more if we had these videos available then. Fascinating :-)

  25. Thank you for your kind comments, folks. I wish my drawing had been as good as the one posted here that I got from Wikimedia Commons - I'm sure I thought it was at the time!

  26. Perfect choice; you transported me right back to eighth grade. Your young mind and desire to draw what you'd seen and imagined--very nice!

  27. Amoeba, an interesting choice for "A". Biology classes were so many years ago, I can't even remember studying about them, but, somewhere along the line I learned about the Amoeba.

  28. Great post Janice. I well remember learning about amoeba at school over ****** years ago. I remember we all wanted to move on to "proper biology" but now know how important it is to start at the beginning.

  29. Well that brought back school day memories for me too. Good choice. A

  30. What a great idea for the letter A.
Also what fun memories you also brought back to me when I was in the 10th grade taking another one of my least favorite classes in disecting frogs. I rather disect a flower any day of the week. ha ha

  31. ha! I haven't thought about an amoeba for years! I think I'm glad we didn't have the video clip. :)

  34. Cool post! I think the beauty of scientific words is highly underrated. It doesn't get much better than Contractile Vacuole.

  35. Oh yes! This brought back memories for me too! Great post - got people thinking which is always a good thing!

    Thanks so much
