Happy Birthday, dear Roxy
Saturday, 23rd March is Roxy’s 9th birthday. Until she was seven, she had three older canine companions, Jenna, Gus and Bertie, and three cats, Herschel, Isambard and Jellicoe. She enjoyed being with all of them but Bertie was the one she played with the most.He was four years older than her and was most indulgent. He always allowed her to take his stick and now she shows Gilbert the same courtesy.
She enjoyed playing with Frankie as they grew up together. She had the loudest snore of any puppy we’ve ever had, though she is challenged now in that department by Herschel.
She has vivid dreams, during which she growls and
whimpers and runs. Generally, she is a quiet dog and doesn’t bark unless she
sees a good reason to do so and then she sounds quite ferocious. This is quite
misleading as she greets all visitors with wild enthusiasm and any thief would be
assured of a warm welcome and more likely to be knocked over through an excess of
excitement.
Labradors are bred to cooperate and collaborate with each other. They work together to retrieve. They are the kindest of dogs.Roxy loves playing with balls and if they're squeaky balls, she's even happier.
Like most Labradors, she relishes water. For a very long time she held her head very high as she swam, as though she didn't want to get her hair wet.
When Roxy lost her three companions in rapid succession, she became quite depressed. The arrival of Gilbert lifted her spirits and he has become a wonderful playmate for her. They're rarely far apart. Although he's now much bigger than her, he is still subordinate.
Ah Happy Birthday Roxy! What a wonderful tribute to her.
ReplyDeleteShe is a really sweet dog:-)
DeleteNot only are labradors the most cooperative of dogs, they are also the most handsome. Roxy is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'll tell her that :-)
DeleteRoxy is very beautiful, Happy Birthday to her. Most people out here seem to prefer yellow Labradors, though my daughter had a black one, who died a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteBlack and yellow (in its various shades) are the most commonly seen colours. Chocolates can be variable, but Roxy is a nice deep brown.
DeleteHappy Birthday, beautiful Roxy! A lovely tribute to a very special dog and to the breed. We've had three "Labradors" but they have all been mixes: a Lab/border collie, a Lab/greyhound, and a Lab/who knows what. I hope Roxy's day has been full of fun. She's a darling girl.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephanie. I must say, we're more excited about her birthday than she is ;-)
DeleteHappy birthday Roxy, it's my birthday today as well love from Val x
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Val. I hope you're having a grand day:-)
DeleteHappy birthday Roxy ! The dogs I like the most are the Golden Retrievers and the Labradors. Of course I love all dogs, and they apparently love me. Wherever I am and there is a dog (the big once not the little waffwaffs) the dogs always come to me, a little Pitbull settled down on my lap in a restaurant, and our friends screamed, poor dog has such a bad reputation thanks to mean owners ! Ever since I live alone with Rosie, she has changed ! I think she had always wanted to be an only cat and not living with 3 others. Only Arthur was her big friend.
ReplyDeleteDogs know where they're welcome.
DeleteCats don't always enjoy the company of other cats. They are solitary creatures, but our cats love our dogs.
Happy Birthday, Roxy. Have a great day packed with doggy treats. xx
ReplyDeleteRoxy can never have too many treats - we have to ration her, or she'd be the size of a horse! x x x
DeleteLovely photos and memories,
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marlene :-)
DeleteHappy Birthday Roxy. You have quite the lovely home and lots of fur to spend play time with. But you have the saddest doggie eyes I have ever seen. I'm sure that's just a playful ploy.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it's a ploy, to make everyone feel sorry for her, and, more importantly, give her treats to 'cheer her up'!
DeleteO how what a beautiful girl 😍
ReplyDeleteOur Jas sounds very similar in habits and temperament. I remember seeing a photo of a lab in one of those impossibly contorted sleeping positions with the caption 'some assembly required ' 😅
Happy Birthday Roxy x
Alison in Wales x
'Some assembly required' - I like that:-) Apparently, if your dogs sleep in that position, they are very relaxed and trusting of their owners. x x x
