A thing of beauty

A thing of beauty is a joy forever

Its loveliness increases; It will never pass into nothingness

Could this line from Endymion by John Keats (1795-1821) be applied to the latest adornment to our house?

In an effort to prevent spillages from drinks hot or cold in the electronic jungle we call home, Barry has given me a cup holder. It attaches to one of the bookshelves by my chair. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

I was subjected to pressure to have my drinks in vessels more suited to the cup holder. I resisted.

  1. Do you know why the spillages from hot and cold drinks occur? Poor eye sight, anxiety, constant exhaustion etc? Mine is definitely an intention tremor, more in my overused right hand.

    1. Drinks are spilled by stepping cats and barging dogs - nothing to do with my competence or otherwise.

  2. What a brilliant idea! My cup/glass teeters on the windowsill next to my favorite place to sit. Inevitably this is when Cricket decides he absolutely MUST also sit on the windowsill. I need a cupholder!

    1. I wouldn't need one if we didn't have dogs and cats. Cats choose the worst routes and situations! 😺

  3. I love how you've made it your own and used the cup you want!

    1. It doesn't sit quite straight so I have to be careful not to overfill it.

    1. It is! I pooh-poohed the idea but am fed up with spillages caused by cats and dogs. It's a pity it's so ugly!

  5. I'm not sure beautiful is the word I'd use for that cup holder, but your cup is very pretty!

    1. I certainly don't think it's beautiful, but it's functional.

  6. I think your cup holder is practical & useful - not sure if I would call it "beautiful". Your cup however - that surely is beautiful 💛

    1. No, it's ugly! I do like pretty cups, though.

  7. The cup is prettier than the holder and I just know I would use a mug if I had a holder. My drinks usually just sit on the table just left of my laptop.

    1. It's the cats and dogs that cause the spills, mainly Jellicoe and Gilbert. The holder is ugly!

    2. Buy some stickers and adhesive gemstones and decorate it.

  8. It does look very practical but I fear that I would still spill my coffee even if I had one of those. I am a clumsy oaf.

    1. I must admit that I'm more relaxed now, even though the holder is definitely not attractive.

  9. Not so beautiful but functional. Better than spilling your drink!

    1. At least I don't keep hearing, 'Mind your drink' and other words to that effect.

  10. The cup holders a clever idea but I'm like you I have a special teacup and there's no way I'm going to give it up. At least I hope I don't break it let's put it that way, lol.

    1. A favourite cup is to be treasured, that's for sure. My favourites change from week to week, inconsistent creature that I am.

  11. I am sorry to have to say this ma'am but that cupholder is NOT a thing of beauty. It is like the end of drainpipe that a roofer has left in the skip. I hope that my brutal reality check does not offend you. Why not simply use an absorbent beermat?

    1. Gilbert does not like to be compared to a beermat, and neither do the cats, so needs must when the devil drives, offensive to the eye as it is.

  19. What a useful and practical gift. Beauty is secondary in such matters, I think.

  25. Hmmmm - it has all been said. Someone probably went to university and did a whole degree in 'design' to come up with that.
