Hot chocolate, drinking chocolate

Cadbury used
to advertise drinking chocolate on television, probably still does, and the refrain,
‘Hot chocolate, drinking chocolate’ springs to mind every time that drink is
mentioned.
Most days I have at least one small mug of hot chocolate. I used to use cocoa or chocolate powder, then progressed to real chocolate flakes.
Talking to my grandson one day, he mentioned that he and his wife had a Velvetiser, which made a superb drink. I had seen a Velvetiser advertised on the Hotel Chocolat website. Hotel Chocolat is a chocolate-lover’s delight, and offers indulgent treats, at Christmas, Easter, birthdays, or just because.
I mulled over the benefits of acquiring a Velvetiser and was eventually persuaded (by Inspector Gadget, who else?) that it would be ‘A Good Thing.’ It makes a beautiful, smooth chocolate drink.
We tried many distinct types of chocolate, but eventually settled for six squares of Green and Black’s 85% organic chocolate bars, grated into milk. Six squares equate to eighteen grammes or 0.6 ounces.I thought that 90% chocolate might be even better. I tried it this morning, but didn’t like it.
I like a good chocolate drink even if it takes more time to make than just a coffee.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very comforting drink.
DeleteI have that Cadbury Drinking Chocolate in my cupboard! Plus a couple extra containers in a store cupboard on the back porch. I know it is supposed to be made with hot milk, but I mix the powder with some cold milk and then top it off with boiling water. It doesn't taste as good, but full milk would be too expensive. I don't have a hot chocolate every day.
ReplyDeleteSome people prefer the less rich version - and I'm sure it's probably better for you!
DeleteThank you for the memories.
ReplyDeleteWhen I broke my ankle recently and did a lot of sitting, my beloved started bringing me a Cadbury Chocolate each afternoon to remind me of the good old days. :)
It seems to taste better when someone else makes it.
DeleteOh yum. I don't have it very often, but really enjoy it when I do!
ReplyDeleteIt's special when it's a rare treat.
DeleteI don’t mind dark chocolate, but I think I need to keep it to 70%.
ReplyDeleteI can eat the 90% chocolate, but prefer 85% - it's quite fruity, to my palate.
Deletelucky for us the chocolate in the states if foul! Occasionally I will go to the import shop and buy GOOD chocolate. It disappears quickly. A velvetizer would be wasted on american chocolate, as if we need another gadget anyway.
ReplyDeleteA little good chocolate goes further than an excess of inferior chocolate.
DeleteCarlos loves a hot chocolate so I may look into this Velvetiser thing!
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested to hear how you and Carlos get on, if you pursue the idea.
DeleteOh my, the Velvetiser sounds very tempting. Green and Black's chocolate is my favorite though I'm one of the apparently odd people who prefers milk chocolate to dark. There is something particularly comforting about a cup of hot chocolate.
ReplyDeleteI like all chocolate! Too much . . .
DeleteOnce you've had the real thing there's no going back... I'd rather drink plain hot water than 'instant' anything these days!
ReplyDeleteI drink plain water the rest of the time, through with lemon or lime juice (not cordial.)
DeleteThese days, I partake only of 90% dark chocolate, seeking both improved health and a reduction in refined sugar.
ReplyDeleteI can eat 90% chocolate, but don't often buy it.
DeleteCadbury's chocolate has never been the same since they ditched real chocolate and went for the cheaper palm oil and cocoa fats substitute.
ReplyDeleteI only (very occasionally) eat 70%+ organic if possible and always check the ingredients first.
Hot chocolate must be made with milk or it's not worth bothering!!
I have recently changed from skimmed milk, which we've had for years, to whole milk. What a difference!
DeleteI don't own one, daughter does, they make divine hot drinking chocolate. We eat Lindt for a treat, they do not include palm oil in theirs.
ReplyDeleteLindt chocolate is lovely.
DeleteI didn't know that Cadbury had a hot chocolate.
ReplyDeleteYour drink sounds fancy. I'm a lazy hot chocolate drinker and use the mix that comes in a packet
We all have our different preferences and there's nothing wrong in that.
DeleteA couple of times a week I make a late night mug of Cadbury's hot chocolate using half boiling water and half hot milk. You have to get the strength right though. You don't want it too weak or too strong.
ReplyDeleteIt's all a matter of taste and choice. I don't think you'd like my hot chocolate.
DeleteI like very dark chocolate in my hot cocoa. But I actually eat the Green & Black's 85% for a treat now and then.
ReplyDeleteIt tastes quite fruity, doesn't it?
DeleteI've never even heard of a velvetiser and can only sort of imagine what it must be. I like hot chocolate but it's one of those things I'd never make at home.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of those gadgets one can easily dispense with, but, what can I say . . . ?
DeleteI'm craving a cup of hot chocolate right now! xxx
ReplyDeleteGo on. Spoil yourself!
DeleteI associate drinking hot chocolate with cold weather, but if you offered me a cup now I'd take you up on it.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I'm not sure about drinking it in the heat. though that's rarely a challenge in GB.
DeleteI like hot chocolate at times. Some are better than others.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteMy daughter loves her Velvetiser and it does make the best hot chocolate. We had a new Hotel chocolat open near us so she is very happy.
ReplyDeleteOoh, temptation on the doorstep . . .
DeleteI've never enjoyed drinking hot chocolate, although I know it is popular.
ReplyDeleteNow a nice cup of tea I can always enjoy :)
All the best Jan
I used to drink tea by the gallon, but rarely have it now - perhaps once a year . . .
DeleteI don't think too many stores sell Cadbury hot chocolate, plus our Cadbury in the States is manufactured by our Hershey's. There is a definite difference between your Cadbury (superior!) and ours.
ReplyDeleteEven our Cadbury's is not as good as it used to be. Standards are slipping everywhere.
DeleteFANCY!! I'm afraid I would be even more ... er... fluffy (if you know what I mean) if I had such a wonderful treat every day :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I do wonder about that, but console myself with the thought that I don't eat much - one meal a day, really.
