Bad dream

Bad dream

Bilbo Baggins said, ‘Not all those who wander are lost,’ but I was.

I was driving an unfamiliar car, following directions that led me into alleyways, cul de sacs, restaurants, private receptions. I was despairing of ever finding my way home when my eldest daughter appeared. When I asked her if she knew the way, she said, ‘Of course, I do. Follow me.’

She set off at a spanking pace and I attempted to follow but was delayed by something and by the time I had extricated myself she had long disappeared. I drove past a hog roast in a front garden several times and ended up in an hotel room, without the car. I vacated the room, and resumed my fruitless journey, unable to locate any road signs that might give me an indication of where I might be. At one point, I reversed into another car, for no apparent reason, damaging both vehicles, didn’t stop to inform anyone and continued driving.

It was a relief to wake up, but I felt so tired after the anxiety of my dreamt journey. Periodically, I have dreams of being lost, though usually in a familiar location, where I will eventually discover a route I know, so this was quite unusual.

Tonight I shall sleep soundly, I hope!

  1. Wow how interesting. I tend to have vivid dreams as well. Yours sounds like a stress dream. I hope you sleep well tonight.

  2. I certainly hope you sleep soundly after that nightmare. I have only ever had two nightmares, the first one I never told anyone about for a very long time, the second one I also didn't mention until the next night when my husband woke up sweaty and shaking having had the exact same nightmare! Most of my dreams are nice, a few are weird but not at all scary and somehow I always know I am dreaming and this isn't real. I think they call that "lucid dreaming".

    1. How strange to 'share' a dream like that. I hate the dreams where I know I'm dreaming, but am paralysed and powerless to do anything.

  3. I have those lost dreams, often tired and walking hopelessly trying to find my car, or my way out of a building, always so glad to wake up.

    1. Dreams don't usually linger for me, just occasionally.

  4. I too have weird dreams at times. Mostly I won't be able to remember them after I wake up. Of course, there are several theories why dream what we dream. I don't know how much of all those are right and wrong.

  5. That was quite a vivid dream, Ma.am. It’s amazing how our minds create such detailed journeys that leave us exhausted when we wake. I hope tonight brings you a peaceful, refreshing sleep instead.

  6. What was it with last night, I wonder? I'm all unsettled after waking in the middle of a strange dream about an animated credit card in thw bedroom controlled by someone in the street outside trying to steal my phone ... just nonsense!

    1. It's the lack of sense in dreams that is so unsettling. I wonder which salesmen have been contacting you recently?

  8. It IS a relief to wake up, alive and intact.

I still have nightmares that wake me up at 3am, reliving the horror of my mother being euthanased against her will by a relative. But this time I put on Leonard Cohen quietly singing Hallelujah next to my bed. It doesn't change the past but it does help with the future.

  9. Quite disturbing. Very vivid, unsettling dreams can linger far too long after waking, I find. Sometimes they still return to haunt me the next night.

  11. I rarely remember dreams, I do sometimes wake up unsettled, which I think maybe because of a dream. Yours must have a meaning if it is recurring.

I dream frequently but can never remember much about them except that I am trying to get somewhere and always end up much farther away. I sometimes recognize certain surroundings from earlier dreams where I have never been in real life, which I find quite strange.

  17. That was full of a lot of detail. I think my dreams must be boring as I only remember a snippet or two. There are mornings when I know I had lots of dreams because I wake up tired as if I had been in several one-act plays all night long.

  19. I feel for you. I am grateful my recurring nightmares about driving on freeways to nowhere, or missing the school bus ( I dreamt that until I was in my 40's) have stopped. Now wait and see if it starts up again tonight, lol.

  23. Dreams can be very unsettling. I've been having strange dreams lately, although it's not often that I can remember much of them. Being lost is a recurring one, though, they must be universal! xxx
