Magic carpet

Magic carpet

. . . or Flying Bedstead?

I was awake early, after a poor night’s sleep, otherwise I might have been startled into consciousness by an announcement from Tom Tom, courtesy of Barry’s iPhone.

‘Traffic is getting worse.

You are still on the fastest route.

You will arrive at 6:41.’

Then, half an hour later, came another announcement:

‘Traffic is getting worse.

You are still on the fastest route.

You will arrive at 8:10.’

I have no idea where we were headed, or why. Tom Tom had been playing up the previous day and not receiving traffic news. A factory reset solved the problem, but why it chose the small hours to prove itself is anyone’s guess.

  1. I think the Universe is telling you it's time for a road trip. But hopefully you'll wait until the traffic isn't that thick.

  2. Is the destination heaven? You might have to head back the other way where there's a heatwave and the tarmac is melting. Tom Tom the bloody piper's son.

  4. It sounded like it was a nightmare just to have this silly thing talking to you in the wee hours.

    1. I was definitely awake - all the disturbing dreams had seen to that!

  5. I think I would be a bit freaked out by it telling me I was on the fastest route. I wonder where it was that you would arrive to.

  7. Back in the day I had a Tom Tom GPS unit. These days Google Maps on my phone is my navigator.

    1. We use both, but Tom Tom is preferable for traffic updates - usually!

    1. What amused me the most was that it didn't wake Barry!

  10. Don't you turn your phones on "night shift" (the little crescent moon on iphones; not sure what it is like with other phones) when you go to bed?

  11. It sounds like the longer you're driving the longer it will take.

  13. I am laughing at Tom Tom. While I am sound asleep at midnight, Phyllis informs that an alarm on my weather station goes off at midnight. I think I've fixed it.

    1. I'm intrigued. What does the weather 'do' at midnight?

  14. Oh my goodness, I often listen to BBC sounds at night through a kind of wireless headband thing - more than once I’ve pressed a button inadvertently and ended up ringing the vet ! I always make sure the phone isn’t open on any other apps now 🤭
Librarians comment is useful - I’ll be checking that out
