It was a bright, blustery day yesterday, with squally showers. There were some interesting cloud formations.
I have discovered the purpose of the hideous building I mentioned last week. It is an assisted living development for people with learning disabilities and mental health needs. The aim is to enable people to live confidently with a greater degree of independence.
It reminds me in some respects of the keep of a mediaeval castle. If the windows were any smaller they could pass as arrow slits. Construction was completed in May 2025.
It is a two-storey building comprising four separate, self-contained apartments of five bedrooms with associated living space.
There is also a rooftop garden for residents.
The complex is situated in an established residential area, close to the medical practice, library, community centre, and shopping centre. There are parks nearby and plenty of safe spaces to walk.
I don't know how places are allocated, or whether there is an on-site warden.
Hopefully the residents have a quiet and safe life here. Very modern looking building.

DeleteWith those windows, I can only imagine it being dark inside. Not much kerb appeal but maybe there is a reason for its unimaginative design. I hope the new residents like it as that is what matters.

DeleteIt comes within the 15 minute city rule and is noteworthy for that for the people who live there. With a garden on the roof it is perhaps a better functioning building than perhaps we see, which is somewhat stark and uninspiring.

DeleteIt does look like it could be part of an old castle. Might look more interesting if they added a tower or two on top! ;)

DeleteThe building is designed for a good purpose but it certainly has a grim and somewhat forbidding appearance.

DeleteIt does indeed look quite institutional, however, the local services sound very friendly to people who need support, especially the library.

DeleteWell??? The first photo does make it look a bit medieval and castlesque...(a word I apparently just made up) and I am rather fond of castles?? Long, long, time ago, I thought there would be nothing better than to live in a castle...but then, while in Europe, I actually visited castles and decided they were much too cold and damp. ;-) But I would still posit that our new ugly buildings are uglier than your ugly new buildings?

ReplyDeleteIt really is not a cheerful building at all. I would not wish to be there if I had 'mental health needs.' Is this a newly built building, or is it an old building repurposed? I would find it depressing to either live there or work there.

DeleteOur feelings were that it would not lighten the mood of anyone with problems, but maybe it's better than the alternative.
