Croissants
When I prepared the salmon for supper last night, I added garlic. I should have marinated it properly, but it was too darned hot! ๐The fillets cooked quickly in the air fryer but were rather tasteless and disappointing. The colourful salad more than compensated for it.
I put the air fryer drawer back while it was still hot, intending to clean it up later. Of course, I forgot. I’m blaming everything on the unseasonable, unreasonable weather at present.
You know how it is when something triggers your memory and you find yourself thinking, ‘That would be nice for a change.’ I may have seen croissants on someone’s blog and the thought lodged in my brain, so I bought some for a treat.
It’s convenient to warm them quickly in the air fryer. This morning, we decided to have one each. We sat quietly eating them. Neither of us said a word, until Barry said, ‘Did you cook the fish in the air fryer last night?’
The croissants had been warmed in the fish-redolent basket that I had neglected to wash. Garlic-flavoured croissants are interesting but not to be recommended, even though we tried to persuade ourselves that they were quintessentially French.
I’m not cooking anything tonight! Supper will be a rainbow salad with blueberries, red and green grapes, cucumber, chicory, lettuce, sliced raw Brussels sprouts, baby corn, tenderstem broccoli, shredded cabbage, grated carrot, celery. yellow pepper, cream cheese, walnuts, and tinned salmon(!)
I shall put all that together while I listen to ‘Rather Be the Devil’ by Ian Rankin. It’s read entertainingly by James Macpherson, though I have had to slow down the reading speed to understand all the different Scottish accents.
I wanted a change from military history, having just finished the excellent ‘Brothers in Arms’ by James Holland. That was read by Al Murray, who is interested in and knowledgeable about Second World War campaigns but is a better comedian than narrator.
I love a croissant for breakfast. I know I have forgotten to wash things in the past, or maybe not rinsed off dish soap very well and having strange tasting food because of it. Couple of good reads there, thanks for sharing.

DeleteI haven't had a croissant in years! They are a pastry and I am not supposed to eat pastries because of the high sugar/fat content. i don't miss them as I never ate them regularly anyway.

DeleteA good reader of an audio book makes listening such a pleasure. It seems the hot weather is improving your diet, except for fish flavoured croissants.

DeleteI have a croissant for breakfast usually several times a week. Indeed the croissant spread with cream cheese and a bowl of fruit on the side is one of my favorite breakfasts. I can't remember if I've read "Rather Be the Devil" although I've read most of Rankin's books. I'll have to check on that. He was my favorite writer for a period of time and I still enjoy him.

DeleteI would have been so disappointed if I was expecting a crisp warm croissant to have it fishy, this very hot weather is not suiting me at all.. I think your salad sounded delicious.

DeleteI love a fresh croissant straight from the baker's but have never had a re-heated one (or with garlic). Your rainbow salad sounds fantastic, although I would leave the salmon out since I am not keen on it. Raw Brussel sprouts? I didn't know they are eaten raw, and I didn't know you can get them right now - here in Germany, they are very much a late autumn and winter thing, and always boiled or baked in the oven (which is very nice, and easily done on a tray, then eaten with red pesto - yum!).
ReplyDeleteI used to hate Brussels sprouts but either I've changed or they have. We eat a lot of raw vegetables and have salad most days.

DeleteWe are lazy with our air fryer, we have silicon liners, which we pop in the dishwasher after use. Your salad sounds great except the brussel sprouts, we have ate salad most days this week.

DeleteHmm ..Fishy croissants. Perhaps not the nicest breakfast. I admit to having done something similar with my air fryer. Must remember to give it a good scrub after use!

DeleteAre all Berkshire housewives as sloppy as you are Janice? Here in Yorkshire wives were often dunked in village ponds when they did not clean their traditional air fryers. As my old mother said more than once, "Women are the home makers".

DeleteI consider myself an adventuresome eater, a seeker of new flavours and textures, a welcome participant in both nouvelle and ancienne cuisine, but I think I will eschew croissants flavoured with last night’s salmon and garlic, thank you very much. Call me shallow, but that’s the way it is.

DeleteI am smiling about your croissants being so flavorful. However I know the feeling of being just too hot inside the house to want to lift the finger to do anything. It hasn't happened here yet, as a matter of fact it's pouring down rain again.

DeleteA lady at our Farmer's Market makes croissants but then folds them into a loaf with cinnamon between the layers and it is so buttery and cinnamon-y delicious!!

DeleteThat salad sounds delicious except for the raw brussels sprouts and broccoli, which my digestion would struggle with. One other thing I like with salads is the combination of fresh mozzarella and strawberries. Enjoy your salad and remember to clean the air fryer basket.

DeleteFish tacos are a "thing" here so I don't imagine garlic salmon croissants are such a far stretch? We had several days of summerish weather here but it had a come apart today when a severe and unexpected (at least for me) storm broke out with lightning, thunder, horrid rain and hail and a precipitous 25ยบ+ drop in temperature.
