Noise!
We are having a lot of work done on the ageing roof of our house. Today it has involved the erection of scaffolding, which is a very noisy process.
The scaffolders have been drilling, sawing, screwing, and dropping scaffolding for several hours now. The dogs have given up barking. I wish I could say my head had given up aching.
Later, maybe . . .
Tomorrow, a huge skip is being delivered to collect all the rubbish which will come from the removal of damp felt, membranes, timbers, and birds’ empty nests. The tiles will be reused, so that’s something to celebrate.
At least we shall have a leak-proof roof by the time all the workmen have gone, by the end of the week. It is not what we were planning but sometimes these events are thrust upon us.
You certainly don't want a wet house so you put up with some pain.

DeleteIt turns out now that it would be a mistake to reuse them on the roof . . . who knows what the decision will be tomorrow . . .
DeleteShed roof? Dog kennel roof? Send them to a recycle facility?

DeleteWe had a new roof put on last year. It was really, really expensive, hopefully it will last a long time lol

DeleteYou will be happy when you know that you will be snug, warm and dry for the rest of your days. That’s worth a little noise and disruption.

DeleteThere is nothing worse than the sound of roof work. Do you have dogs? That makes it worse.
ReplyDeleteWe have two Labradors. They're very tolerant and have accepted a gang of workmen clumping around the roof. 😳
DeleteClanging scaffolding has nothing going for it but a weatherproof roof is an essential for a good life.

DeleteWe had an Irish born man tint out windows a couple of decades age and he happened to mention he was a roofer. Why did you stop, I asked him. He replied that Australian rooves were rubbish and too depressing to work on. Granted our rooves are quite simple, with silver foil underneath sheets of tin, clay or sometimes concrete tiles.

Delete"Rooves" Andrew? Is that not just "roofs"? I always thought the "ves" was just for horses: hoof-hooves. Rooves just sounds wrong.

DeleteNoise stresses me out like few other things in life, and building noise is one of the worst... Can't you flee somewhere during the day? Do you need to be around to supervise the work, or be at hand when questions arise?
ReplyDeleteI remember several years ago when O.K.'s parents had the roof done on his cottage (it belongs to his mother, a former outbilding that was part of the farm when it still was a working farm). The work happened to be done while we were away on holiday anyway - a blessing!
I'd love to disappear for the day, but we need to be on hand to answer any questions and, more importantly, to refill water bottles. The men are working hard!
DeleteHope you have more success with roofers than my neighbours over the back. The gang is back for the third time and taking tiles off the same area again. Their scaffolding has been up for most of the year!

DeleteHere the noise from the works going on in the square, can either be lorryloads emptied with great noise or the persistent peep, peep of those little machines as they back. This house suffers from leaking from the chimney, though it has been done twice and the roof should be perfect.

DeleteCriky that will cost a bit, we have always had what I called a roof fund.. just a name for a saving account and not to be touched in case we need a new roof!

DeleteI can’t stand building works of any kind……..noise, mess, disruption. But, needs must sometimes…….a new roof sounds like a major undertaking.

DeleteOh my, that's a big job! We had our roofing replaced five years' ago, but only the shingles and that was noisy enough. Lovely to have a brand new roof though, with no leaking.

DeleteNoise is right. When we had our roof redone 7 ish years ago, I thought the whole roof was going to come collapsing down right on us. There were I think 5 guys up there, and once they got off all the old shingles and threw them to the ground which made lots of noise; they started with all the nail guns going at the same time. Wow....But, as you said...it will be nice to have a new dry roof. Best of luck to you.

DeleteIt's been more than 10 years since we had. our roof replaced. At least I was at work so I wasn't that exposed to the noise. But my husband was home. Now I can be a little more understanding of what he went through.

DeleteAhhh...I know the agony of NOISE. When the lake house flooded and the (so-called) remediation "team" came in to try and dry things out (more like demolition-ing the entire lower level) I thought the "noise" of newly-done things (flooring, trim, doors, etc.) being ripped and wrenched out was excruciating but then came the noise of an army of machines running 24/7...dryers, air purifiers, air monitors, etc. etc. The din was unbelievable. I could not even hear a phone ring, the doorbell sound or watch a show on the television. So I can - and do - empathize. Hoping it goes quickly and as painlessly as possible from here out. (But a tile roof? How awesome!)

DeleteMost of our roofs have tiles. The chocolate box houses have thatch and all the problems associated with that . . . 😁

DeleteFortunately the cats didn't bark ! This week there was an awful drilling noise here, I thought it was a giant dentist, they are renovating the first floor and have taken the parquet out !
