Another
lovely topper
I hope it’s still there when the children return to school after half-term!
How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower!
How skilfully she builds her cell!
How neat she spreads the wax!
And labours hard to store it well
With the sweet food she makes.
In works of labour or of skill,
I would be busy too;
For Satan finds some mischief still
For idle hands to do.
In books, or work, or healthful play,
Let my first years be passed,
That I may give for every day
Some good account at last.
Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
I wonder if that is the first mention of the devil making work for idle hands.
ReplyDeleteI shall have to investigate!
DeleteWho creates the very skilful work and who pays for it?
ReplyDeleteI think they're mostly created by craft groups who may ask for donations of wool, otherwise there's no payment.
DeleteWhat a wonderfully cheering and skillfully done piece of work. Big smiles for this!
ReplyDeleteIt gladdens the heart, doesn't it?
DeleteThat's a really beautiful one. A few weeks ago some of the coronation ones were featured in our newspaper.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be a worldwide phenomenon - lovely to see such artistry.
DeleteHi Janice - love the poem you've used to describe the topper with its beauty ... fun - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hilary. I can only remember the first lines of that poem - must try harder ;-)
DeleteThat's fabulous, it's lovely that people go to so much effort to make these community decorations.
ReplyDelete. . . and anonymously, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you for commenting on my blog. Where i Live in West Wales there is a keenness for 'yarn bombing' - at the tome of the Coronation every pillar in town seemed to have a crochet crown on it. Later it will be summer theme and then halloween - and Christmas. I rather like it too.
ReplyDeleteIt appears to be a nation-wide phenomenon, does no harm and pleases many :-)
DeleteWhat an ambitious crocheter. I am not sure what kind of structure it is topping. A water hydrant? A help call box? I think it is delightful sight.
ReplyDeleteClever work, isn't it? It's atop a post box.
DeleteI hadn't thought of a post box. Ours are dark blue and square, lol.
DeleteThat never occurred to me:-))
DeleteThat topper is particularly gorgeous - I am hoping I'll come across some when in Shropshire! Loving the poem as well! xxx
ReplyDeleteI hope you find some. There were some in April: https://www.shropshirestar.com/news/royal-family/coronation/2023/04/27/postbox-toppers-fit-for-a-king-popping-up-around-shropshire/
