A pubful of dads . . .

A pubful of dads . . .

One day, with a class of 7-year-olds, I talked about collective nouns and the children became quite excited and started making up their own. I wish I had noted them all, for they were imaginative, but the one that stuck in my head was ‘a pubful of dads.’

'Two pints of your best, please, Landlord'

The latest post box topper marks Fathers’ Day, which was 16th June.

I wonder if the next – if there will be a next – will celebrate the local biennial carnival, the election, the Olympics, or something else entirely.

  3. Yes, I too am impressed by the 'pubful of dads'. Still relevant in 2024?

    1. I don't know whether it's still relevant - maybe more so in some communities than others.

    1. I can't remember the child's name, sadly, but I did like her imagination.

  6. The knitting people are very clever, I almost said ladies, but men knit as well.

  9. Well these years definitely colorful and cute, but my question is what did they do for Mother's day? Wouldn't want to have it being a one-sided affair.

    1. I don't know how these things are decided. I think it's a local group who get together and work on a theme.

  12. "A pubful of dads" is such a vivid image. This is how we could all write and speak if only we could keep our childlike way of looking at the world.

  14. I love that crocheted topper. A pubful of dads. I love it, too. Years ago, an afternoon TV show in my United States had a segment called "KIds Say the Darnedest Things" and the host of the show (Art Linkletter), I think, wrote a book full of sayings he had heard. They really do say the darnedest things.

    1. I often wish I had taken the time to record what children at school did and said. Sadly, I was always too busy teaching!
