Every day, something new . . .

Every day, something new . . .

Of all the dogs we have known and loved, Gilbert is the one who has proved to be the most interested in parcels. He is extremely excited when a parcel is delivered, whatever the dimensions of the package, and his nose is pressed as closely as it can be when a box is unwrapped.

He can hardly wait to investigate the contents and I’m sure he thinks he is helping.

It the parcel contains something food-related, like ‘Whimzees’ dog chews, or ‘Thrive’ cat treats, he becomes ever more attentive. Sometimes, if he is very lucky, he might receive a treat, and so might Roxy, who is always watching.

Occasionally, a box may contain plants, and they are especially fascinating. Dogs learn so much through their noses and are often to be found burying their heads among the plants, either in the garden or the conservatory.

Once the contents have been revealed, Gilbert is happy to resume whatever he was doing beforehand, usually sleeping.

  1. last photo is the sweetest ever. It makes my heart swell to twice its size- that sounds like a possible hospital visit but , no, it is the good kind of swell.

    1. The cats seek out the dogs, rather than the other way round.

  6. Love them sleeping together, brings back memories of our German Shepherd sleeping in the sun with the cat between his paws and the galah (bird) on his back. Lola rarely shows interest in parcels.

  8. Your beautiful dog could work at the airport, sniffing around passengers as soon as they land.

    1. I think he'd be sniffing for treats, though. He could be a friendly welcoming party, though.

  10. I love to see pets snuggling together, we only had two cats who would sleep together, all the others found their own spots.

  11. Gilbert’s parcel enthusiasm is adorable; his curious nose and hopeful excitement make every delivery a little event, even if he’s just as happy to nap afterward.

    1. We have to be careful when opening parcels with a knife, as Gilbert's nose is so enthusiastic.

  13. It looks like the old joke about the cat scan and the lab report! Please pass on gentle scritches to both of your gorgeous pets.

  14. I'm with Gilbert here. I love receiving parcels. Oh the anticipation ...even if it's only a replacement filter for the fridge.

  15. At least he doesn't open them himself. Mr T enjoyed disemboweling parcels.

  16. Sounds like you should rename Gilbert. Call him Parker instead... as in Nosy Parker!

    1. Can't rename him now - it took long enough to get used to calling him Gilbert, rather than Bertie.

  17. Precious love to smell the envelopes out of the mailbox everyday. Animals have such a curiosity and in their wild world a need to know where the smell comes from. I hope Roxy's foot has healed by now. And that Jellico is doing okay. My friend's dog had to go back and have a bone chip removed from his foot but thankfully he did not lose his foot. It just would not heal and stayed infected. He's still on antibiotics almost 3 months later.

    1. Ooh, that sounds nasty. Three months is a long time to recover.
Roxy and Jellicoe are both fine now, thank you.

  18. How cute. Gilbert reminds me of a dog I had years ago. He was a chocolate lab named Winston. He loved to open presents and it was as much fun for us watching him as it was for him opening them.

  19. Gilbert's a nosey boy, likes to know the goings on, haha. How lovely that they all get on so well together, dogs and cats.

  20. Do you ever wish that you had the olfactory senses of a dog? It would be interesting to experience once, but I do not think I would like it as an ongoing experience. Gilbert is very cute, I would send him a package just to imagine the joy it would bring him.
