Strange noises from the kitchen.
Roxy with her satellites, Jellicoe, top, and HerschelThey were not loud noises, but could not be ignored – a gentle tap tap. My immediate thought was that a box was being knocked around the floor. There are always empty boxes, usually ones that have contained cat food pouches. Perhaps one had not been put into the recycling bin and Gilbert was playing with it. No. Gilbert was in the sitting room, sleeping the sleep of the virtuous.
No food had been left out – we try always to put everything edible away (sometimes we fail!) and there are locks on the freezer and the fridge, so it wasn’t Jellicoe helping himself to something. Anyway, he was also in the sitting room, along with Herschel and Gilbert.
Roxy was missing!
I found her by the dog food storage container, looking simultaneously innocent and guilty, as Labradors are wont to do. She had been opening the lid of the bin and enjoying a surreptitious snack. The bin has a lock, but it had not been deployed (who was the culpable party?) and Roxy was in seventh heaven.
There had not been sufficient time for her to test her capacity to the limit; nonetheless, her supper will be adjusted to allow for her over-indulgence.
It's a
dog’s life!
Ha ha! Very clever of her.
ReplyDeleteShe's cunning!
DeleteWhen there is food involved most dogs are very clever at getting to it.
ReplyDeleteToo right!
DeleteI wonder how she knew to check it! Was there an open space where the smell of food was leaking out? The trio look very content in those photos. A pile of love.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling she does a regular patrol of all the places food is kept and discovered that the bin wasn't locked.
DeleteSmart dog indeed.
ReplyDeleteI love them all canoodling.
She's led by her stomach . . .
DeleteFood can't be kept away! They will get it! Nice pic too!
ReplyDeleteWhere there's a will . . .
DeleteWhat a classic Labrador moment—Roxy’s sneaky snack raid is both hilarious and endearing, especially with that unmistakable mix of guilt and innocence!
ReplyDeleteShe is a very sweet - and greedy! - dog.
DeleteSleeping with such innocence. Thank you for the smile :)
ReplyDeleteNo hunger pangs keeping her awake, for sure.
DeleteWhat an opportunist!
ReplyDeleteThat, she is.
DeleteWe have two boxes in our sitting room, Lilly loves them. Every cat we have had took every opportunity to steal food.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they think we're just setting them intelligence tests.
DeleteHi Janice - they 'ain't stupid' are they ... but we do love them - great fun read - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteNo, not stupid. They leave that to the humans.
DeleteHow do they know when the lock has not been deployed? They must test the latch every day - possibly several times a day if they live in hope.
ReplyDeleteI really think she must check several times a day, just in the hope of success. Patience was rewarded.
DeleteAnd isn't she just a smart puppy. Precious loves it when we put her Tim cup of food on the counter and turn our back for a minute. I try not to do that because she immediately jumps up and starts eating out of the cup. Where as I try to stretch it out by putting a little at a time in her bowl.
ReplyDeleteCats can be so sneaky - and quick!
DeleteI imagine that Roxy was enjoying her indulgent snack time. Smart dog. Love the picture of the three of them napping together.
ReplyDeleteGoodness knows how much she would have eaten if I hadn't caught her.
DeleteThis story did have me smiling ...
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday.
All the best Jan
I smile when I think about it, too.
DeleteTheft is repugnant and deserves punishment. Have you got any doggie stocks that you can put Roxy in ? Let her face the Roxy Music!
ReplyDeleteIf we threw rotten apples at her, she'd only eat them and look for more.
DeleteRoxy was clever, but probably wondered why supper was skimpy!
ReplyDeleteAs long as there's something in her bowl she's happy.
DeleteDogs aren’t exactly picky eaters, eh? Meanwhile, It is a guessing game with our cat.
ReplyDeleteOur dogs certainly aren't fussy, though some are. A picky cat can be quite a concern.
DeleteClever Roxy x
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
She thought so, too.
DeleteIf i was born a canine I would be Roxy! And i would decorate myself with cats.
ReplyDeleteShe's a real sweetie - not a nasty bone in her.
DeleteThose characters! It's many years since I had pets, but I still attribute weird noises in the house to them.
ReplyDeleteI still get alarmed at times when cats suddenly stop and stare into the middle distance, seeing things mere humans cannot.
DeleteLovely story and photo.
ReplyDeleteThank you.😀
DeletePoor Roxy! She thought she was getting away with it!
ReplyDeleteWell, she did, for a short while, and she can vacuum up food remarkably swiftly.
DeleteRoxy's a clever dog indeed! xxx
ReplyDeleteShe knows where to search!
DeleteLabs, retrievers, all the same when it comes to food!
ReplyDeleteYes, and add Dalmatians and Jack Russell terriers, too.
DeleteYour photos of Roxy paint her as a saint :-)
ReplyDeleteDid you notice her halo?
DeleteRoxy is one smart girl!
ReplyDeleteShe is.
DeleteWhat beautiful babies.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you! 😀
ReplyDeleteRoxy is one smart cookie
ReplyDeleteShe is a good house dog, too. She'd never do anything to an intruder, but she'd deafen them.
