Strange noises

Strange noises  from the kitchen.

Roxy with her satellites, Jellicoe, top, and Herschel

They were not loud noises, but could not be ignored – a gentle tap tap. My immediate thought was that a box was being knocked around the floor. There are always empty boxes, usually ones that have contained cat food pouches. Perhaps one had not been put into the recycling bin and Gilbert was playing with it. No. Gilbert was in the sitting room, sleeping the sleep of the virtuous.

No food had been left out – we try always to put everything edible away (sometimes we fail!)  and there are locks on the freezer and the fridge, so it wasn’t Jellicoe helping himself to something. Anyway, he was also in the sitting room, along with Herschel and Gilbert.

Roxy was missing!

I found her by the dog food storage container, looking simultaneously innocent and guilty, as Labradors are wont to do. She had been opening the lid of the bin and enjoying a surreptitious snack. The bin has a lock, but it had not been deployed (who was the culpable party?) and Roxy was in seventh heaven.

There had not been sufficient time for her to test her capacity to the limit; nonetheless, her supper will be adjusted to allow for her over-indulgence.

It's a dog’s life!

  2. When there is food involved most dogs are very clever at getting to it.

  3. I wonder how she knew to check it! Was there an open space where the smell of food was leaking out? The trio look very content in those photos. A pile of love.

    1. I have a feeling she does a regular patrol of all the places food is kept and discovered that the bin wasn't locked.

  6. What a classic Labrador moment—Roxy’s sneaky snack raid is both hilarious and endearing, especially with that unmistakable mix of guilt and innocence!

  8. We have two boxes in our sitting room, Lilly loves them. Every cat we have had took every opportunity to steal food.

    1. No, not stupid. They leave that to the humans.

  10. How do they know when the lock has not been deployed? They must test the latch every day - possibly several times a day if they live in hope.

    1. I really think she must check several times a day, just in the hope of success. Patience was rewarded.

  11. And isn't she just a smart puppy. Precious loves it when we put her Tim cup of food on the counter and turn our back for a minute. I try not to do that because she immediately jumps up and starts eating out of the cup. Where as I try to stretch it out by putting a little at a time in her bowl.

  14. Theft is repugnant and deserves punishment. Have you got any doggie stocks that you can put Roxy in ? Let her face the Roxy Music!

    1. If we threw rotten apples at her, she'd only eat them and look for more.

    1. Our dogs certainly aren't fussy, though some are. A picky cat can be quite a concern.

  19. Those characters! It's many years since I had pets, but I still attribute weird noises in the house to them.

    1. She is a good house dog, too. She'd never do anything to an intruder, but she'd deafen them.
