A life on the ocean wave . . .

A life on the ocean wave . . .

 . . . well, Solent, anyway.

                                    Kat, Callum, Hailey and Melia

Callum ‘phoned. He was taking Kat and the children to the boat, just to familiarise them with it, though Hailey is too young to do more than just sit and look. Kat was intending to take the children home after a couple of hours, so Callum asked if Barry would be interested in going for a sail.

Melia gets to grips with ship to shore technology in the navigatorium.

Barry hasn’t been down to the boat for an exceptionally long time, with things like sepsis and pneumonia and associated problems disturbing the natural order of things. He agreed he would like a day’s sailing. It’s always enjoyable for him as he doesn’t have to do anything, just keep an eye on things and issue occasional instructions while Callum does the rest very capably.

Callum takes his ease before setting sail

Susannah, at home with us for the weekend, said she would drive, as she would like to see her nephew and meet her great-nieces.

Hamble Point Marina is just over an hour away from us, and they set off shortly after 9.00. Callum lives much closer, so his journey is significantly shorter.

Marnie and Dean joined the party later with their two children, who are old enough to take on some of the tasks. It was a lovely day, with light airs, blue sky, and a pleasant amount of sun.

                                            Fergus and Isla
They had a wonderful day, avoiding the Isle of Wight ferries and the cruise liners. The Solent is a remarkably busy stretch of water, but big enough that close encounters of the sailing kind are easily avoided.

Barry brings the boat alongside after a most enjoyable day

(I don't know whether the video will play! Just checked - it won't.)

Plans are afoot for the future. Gareth and Elliot fancy a day out, too.

It can only be flown when Barry is aboard

    1. That's fascinating. Video uploads never play for me these days.
Barry has sailed all his life - I think he could do it in his sleep. 😁

  3. Oh I’d love to have a boat. We have one kayak. Doesn’t quite cut it. We had a boat growing up so I do miss it. Lovely pictures of the children and family. Looks like the perfect boating day.

  4. You included a video, thank you. (t played) Barry did a fine job. A day on the water with fresh salty air and sunshine, what could be better? I miss watching the waves and think I might soon take a bus and train to one of my favourite beaches.

    1. I'm amazed that the video played - it won't for me. Did you get sound as well? Technology hates me!

  5. Looks like a fine day! You will have to explain the 'defaced blue ensign'. I did not understand

    1. 'Defaced' sounds damaged, doesn't it? I think a blog post may be upcoming . . .

  6. Neat bit of manoeuvring there! It brought back so many memories of my father; he loved sailing and developed the Falmouth Yacht Marina (retired in 1987). A super day for 'indoctrinating ' the children!

    1. How interesting. My husband sailed out of Falmouth before there was a marina!

  7. We live along the Solent, and love watching everyone in and on the water, we are not sailors at all, still we find enjoyment watching others, sounds a perfect day for everyone.

    1. I like watching the sea and those on it. I used to love it when we had a mooring at Gosport - so much going on there.

  9. Hi Janice - that looks a lovely day for some of the family and note that there'll be another with luck and the weather holding. Wonderful post - and yes I enjoyed the video ... great fun for all the kids, let alone the caring parents and grandparents ... thanks - fun! Cheers Hilary

  13. You did not get to enjoy the day on the water with them. But it's lovely that they brought home so many photos for you to see what was happening. Certainly looks like they had good weather for such a thing.

  14. Ive never sailed. A car pool friend and her hubby had one and invited me to crew, but I had other things to do at the time.

  15. A life on the ocean wave is a relaxing, healthy way for adults to enjoy themselves, but from your photos, the children seem to be enjoying themselves just as much. Well done, team!

  16. The clip played. Steering a boat is rather harder than steering a car. What a great day out for all. Didn't you wish you were onboard too?

    1. It is harder and that's why Barry always takes the boat in. I would have liked to have seen everyone, but I had seen them all recently.

  19. I'd have chosen dogsitting at home, letting the other people, I'm guessing family, go off doing hair raising things on water! I'm definitely a dry land person. But they look happy.

  20. Sailing is either peaceful or exciting. I don't like exciting and peaceful can be mind-numbing - for me. I enjoy an occasional sail, but am happy to let the rest of the family, whoever wants to go, enjoy themselves.

  21. The video worked fine for me but I was astonished that Barry was not wearing the correct hat. He needs a peaked sailor's cap like Captain Birdseye. Instead, he looked like an Australian bushwhacker.

  22. Yep - never wears the right costume! 😜

  23. Oh gosh. That looked like so much fun.
Lovely day together as a family, and the weather was glorious ... what more? :)

  31. I'd have loved to have had a boat, although for those we know that have then, it seems to be a full time occupation.

    1. It can take up a lot of time, but our boat is looked after by a charter company, who deal with all the maintenance. That's a relief.

  34. Great skill - berthing at Hamble Point with a tide running can be very 'fraught'. We used to sail from there for Hamble Winter and Warsash Spring series racing.

  35. What a wonderful day! There’s nothing like a boating trip and it looks like they all had a great time.

I laugh every day, as last year, some neighbours of ours bought a boat and they keep it on their driveway. Do you know how many times they have taken the boat out this summer…bearing in mind the summer we’ve had, weather wise? Well, they’ve taken it out…ONCE! 😆
