Summer visitors
Arthur goes to bed with at least one toy.Arthur has come to stay for a couple of weeks while his owner visits the South of France for a few days. It is a working holiday for her. She was recently made redundant but managed to get another short-term contract, so is working remotely. She has gone with a pregnant friend whose parents have a holiday home there.
Arthur was always going to stay with us, but the cats had to come, too. The cat-sitting arrangements fell through while Susannah waited for confirmation of her new job. Solomon, Lenny, and Zula are safely ensconced in what we laughingly call the South Wing, East Wing, West Wing?? another part of the house anyway, where she and Frankie lived for almost six years. It’s just the three old bedrooms of our children, nothing spectacular.
Herschel and Jellicoe are fascinated and sit near the dividing door when I go in to ‘see to the cats.’ Arthur dances around outside, not desperate to visit his housemates. They are not nearly as tolerant as our felines, who give him a good ignoring while attempting to steal his food.
Stopping for a portraitArthur is a very obedient little dog – a working Cocker spaniel, with boundless energy and the sweetest nature. Out of the house for a walk, he dashes hither and yon, but never goes far from whoever is walking him, currently Barry. He is polite to other dogs and people but is not really interested in them. Susannah has trained him exceptionally well. He is a great companion for her and an alert guard dog, though he would greet any intruder with immense joy.
I now have two dogs at my feet. Dogs seem to need more contact and reassurance than bitches. Roxy comes to us now and again for attention, but she’s much more independent than the boys. I suppose that’s the nature of the beast. The girls instinctively nurture their young.
On of Canada's favorite story tellers Stuart Maclean ha a dog Arthur as a character in his stories.
ReplyDeleteI must look him up.
DeleteWarm and fuzzy feelings when reading about pets.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Animals are so innocent . . . well, the domestic ones, anyway.
DeleteWe don't have any pets now but I have baby sat for our grand cat in the past. This week while my kids on vacation, our grand cat is staying with my sister in law who has two cats. I wish I could say that they all play together but for some reason our grand cat does not tolerate other cats coming near her.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention how cute Arthur is !!
DeleteCats don't always get on well together. Our two litter brothers tolerate each other and have spats quite often.
DeleteAaahh how sweet! I hope he enjoys his holiday - and you enjoy his company
ReplyDeleteHe misses his mistress but he's very adaptable and great company and he enjoys being with our dogs.
DeleteArthur has the sweetest face..
ReplyDeleteHe has the sweetest temperament to go with it.
DeleteWhat a super house guest!
ReplyDeleteHe is . He's a bit fizzy sometimes, but a lovely boy.
DeleteArthur looks like a true sweetheart. I like the new header photo. Is there a story that goes with it?
ReplyDeleteHe is a sweetheart, you're right.
DeleteArthur looks like a gentle playful boy.
ReplyDeleteHe is very gentle, though last night something disturbed him and he barked for a short while. Our dogs, of course, didn't utter!
DeleteYou are fortunate that the cats fascinate Herschel and Jellicoe. Imagine finding the cats were very anxious, or that they invaded the dogs' space.
ReplyDeleteOur cats would love to visit the visiting cats, but they're not allowed to. They used to all get on together, but alas, no longer.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous dog! A well behaved dog is always a pleasure. We see a large setter trotting past the house with its owner most days and he is a joy to watch. He's going a bit grey now... I suppose we've been watching him for 7 or 8 years, come to think of it...
ReplyDeleteHe's a very pretty dog. Setters flow along when they walk, don't they?
DeleteBest type of visitor, well behaved.
ReplyDeleteBetter than many children! 😂🤣
DeleteArthur is certainly very cute. A look that invites affection.
ReplyDeleteHe has a way of pleading for attention - irresistible.
DeleteArthur is so cute. Your house must have cuteness overload at present.
ReplyDeleteIt has - and that's without Barry and me! 😟
DeleteArthur looks like a real sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteHe's a very nice dog.
DeleteCocker spaniels are lovely dogs. My daughter has one. Very bouncy. And he loves chasing cats.
ReplyDeleteBouncy is the word. Arthur doesn't chase cats - he wouldn't dare.
DeleteWell you certainly have a house full of visitors don't you. And I suppose everybody has their favorite meal that you're going to have to go out in the shop for. Have fun with them. And I hope the south of France turns out into a lovely trip.
ReplyDeleteNo fancy meals here - eat what you're given or go without. As for the animals' meals . . . 😉😜
DeleteI think the greater contact need for dogs might be true for cats too.
ReplyDeleteI know some cats don't seem to need contact, but ours have always craved it.
DeleteWhat a lovely chap Arthur looks
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
He's lovely, He needs a haircut. His grooming costs more than some humans'.
ReplyDeleteHi Janice - what a lovely post ... fun to read, and to think about. I hope Susannah gets another contract soon, before this one finishes - but the South of France and a holiday home sounds like a good choice for a bit of chill time too - cheers to you and the menagerie - Hilary
ReplyDeleteShe has been working remotely but has managed some time to herself. Fingers crossed for more work when this project finishes.
DeleteHe looks like a charming dog! Olga was never much interested in other dogs either. Some dogs are just like that.
ReplyDeleteThey are. We've had some that cannot resist greeting other dogs and people, and others that can take them or leave them, apart from the ones they live with, that is.
DeleteThe south of France sounds fantastic, but not as much if you have to be worrying about getting another short term assignment. Arthur’s portrait is so sweet.
ReplyDeleteShe spends her life worrying, poor soul. Arthur is very good for her.
ReplyDeleteI had a smile reading this blog post. Thanks jabblog.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point about the need for reassurance from you for the dogs.
It's always the boys . . .
DeleteVery nice
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteWhat a cutie, Arthur is. Love the photo with his favorite toy in his mouth. He really looks like a cuddly pup.
ReplyDeleteHe always greets everyone with a toy in his mouth. Any change of activity requires a toy, too.
DeleteI know others have also said it but... aww Arthur does look a cutie ... lovely pictures.
ReplyDeleteI wish Susannah well in getting another contract soon.
All the best Jan
Thank you.
DeleteArthur is beautiful (as are all your furry family members). We used to have a working cocker spaniel when we were on the farm - his name was King. Gosh did he LOVE to work the stock - he was amazing. Just wonderful dogs with great natures.
ReplyDeleteTheir noses never stop working.
DeleteI love the photos of Arthur, which really seem to capture his personality.
ReplyDeleteHe's a happy chappie.
DeleteHe's a very happy dog.
ReplyDeleteAw, Arthur with his toy. I wonder if that's a male thing. Quill likes the small felt mice, and some other small critters that squeak. He makes a crying sound when he carries them. Usually, he carries them and leaves them in our bedroom.
ReplyDeleteI love it when cats make little noises when they carry things, so long as the things they're carrying aren't making little noises themselves.
Deletesuch a lovely little pooch. Hope all goes well with the others, visiting guests can disrupt no matter how sweet and gorgeous they are.
ReplyDeleteThey're not trouble - we just have to 'do more' than usual, which is no bad thing for me!
DeleteApparently pets with the name Arthur, are special ! He is real cute ! I wished I had Arthur here in "my" castle, Rosie isn't particularly affectionate, never lies on my lap, doesn't sleep in my bed, and, what's really strange is that she doesn't purr! I never noticed that before. But she eats a lot !
ReplyDeleteShe's good company for you, though - another beating heart.
