January 2010
We had a lot of snow in the winter of 2010 - a lot for this part of the world, anyway. At that time, we had four dogs – two Dalmatians, Frodo the Faller and Buddy Liver Spots, and two working Labradors, Jenna and baby Gus.
Buddy
Liver Spots and Jenna
They loved the snow. The air was crisp, the smells enhanced, the sensation under their paws different – soft and cold – but they didn’t stay out long enough to get chilled. It was cold, but there was no wind to pinch their ears and noses.
Gus in a drift
Where the
snow had drifted, it was easy for the Labradors almost to disappear, especially
Gus, as he was only a few months old and still smaller than tiny Jenna, the little dog with the enormous paws.
'Follow my leader'
The ball almost luminesces
Frodo, my
Velcro dog, always kept close to me, but also adored Buddy, who was almost
blind by then, having recovered from meningitis. Buddy enjoyed his walks but was
kept on a long lead as he had a habit of wandering off at speed in the wrong
direction, and then worrying because he had no idea where he was. The more he worried, the faster he trotted.
January 2026
This is the snow we've had so far this year. There may be more later on.
We have had some very heavy frosts and a little fog. Heavy rain is forecast but will probably pass us by.

You see that with lost dogs as they are panicking when they've lost their owners. They run, quite chaotically as they search. If my mother saw this happening she would order whoever was driving to stop and then order someone else out of the car to try to sort the dog out. Your dogs were clearly enjoying the snow.
ReplyDeleteA lost dog is a very sad sight.
DeleteI did not realise that you are now a BBC weather reporter. "...And now it's over to Janice Cooke for tonight's weather report. Good evening Janice. How's it looking out there?"
ReplyDeleteI know. So many strings to my bow . . .
DeleteThat was certainly a snowy year for you. We have had much less this year than last, and I admit I miss it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dogs! Nothing like having a swirl of them around you!
Through the dogs we explore nature.
DeleteI love the look of snow, but I'm happy I don't have to live with it.
ReplyDeleteIt's easier to look at than to walk in.
DeleteWe are having another snow day here, about 4 inches, which comparatively speaking is not a big deal, since the 17 inches we had melted off completely before this storm moved in. What a strange winter it has been. EVERYWHERE!
ReplyDeleteIs it too fanciful to think that Nature is trying to tell us something we should pay attention to?
DeleteI assumed that some dogs derive from snow countries and tolerate snow well now eg Siberian Huskies and Newfoundlands. But Dalmations seem much happier in the warmth.
ReplyDeleteDalmatians have short coats, but don't seem to suffer in the winter if they're fit. Our temperatures are not usually extreme.
DeleteCute puppers! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDelete😊
DeleteBeautiful dogs. It's nice to see them enjoying the snow. How many inches was it? Do you remember?
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I don't know how deep the snow was, but the dogs really enjoyed it.
DeleteYour 2010 snow made me check out what it was like here during that winter. According to my blog (which was only in its 2nd year then), we had quite a bit of snow, too:

Lovely to see dogs enjoying the snow! When out on a walk, I often observe dogs running on the fields, and while I have mixed feelings about this because of the ground-living and -breeding wildlife around, I sometimes imagine how great it must be to run on four legs.
I think your temperatures in 2010 were a lot lower than ours, at least in the south of England.
DeleteGoodness I remember that - it was Mr T's first winter with us and we had to go to a wedding at St Andrews in the middle of all that snow. Mr T had to fend for himself in the garage for two days!
ReplyDeleteAww, Mr T!
DeleteWalking dogs is the best thing out. My dog Moss, a sheepdog was obsessed by the ball and it had to be thrown all the time. But when we went on trips to find archaeological places he could always remember the way back and would lead you through gorse instinctively.
ReplyDeleteDog have so many instincts that humans would love to acquire.
DeleteLovely photo's, lovely memories, we have had less snow than you along the south coast.
ReplyDeletePhotographs are essential for memories.
DeleteWhat fun to see your dogs enjoying themselves. A lovely description of their antics. We had sleet last night and a few snow flakes, but it doesn’t appear to have amounted to anything.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather have straightforward rain or snow than sleet any day.
DeleteAll 4 dogs look like they really enjoyed that snow.
ReplyDeleteThey did.
DeleteI think many dogs enjoy snow, and your dogs of 2010 would have loved where I live. I had to look it up. The winter of 2009-2010 was a harsh one-it looks like we topped out for the season at 279.4 cm or 110 inches. I hope we don't get anywhere near that this season.
ReplyDeleteNow that is a LOT of snow!
DeleteNot enough snow for Roxy and Gilbert to have a romp in.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't even upset the cats.
Deletehere in Florida, 2010 was a total different weather pattern than now. our backyard jungle was gorgeous and full of flowers and butterflies and bees. not now.
ReplyDeletelove seeing your 4 pups, so beautiful. good idea on the long lead.. I had a few moments myself this past week browsing my old posts and seeing how much has changed.
It's startling to realise how much has changed in recent decades. I never thought I would miss having insects spattering the car windscreen.
DeleteYou are quite the dog people
ReplyDeleteTrue, that!
DeleteWe get snow every so often here, but haven't had a lot for about ten years. I'd like some snow please.
ReplyDeleteBe careful what you wish for . . . 😉
DeleteI can do without snow. Snow belongs on mountain tops and Christmas cards. The weather dudes are humming about a storm for us at the end of the week.
ReplyDeleteSnow should be peaceful, quiet and non-threatening . . .
DeleteThere is something magical about snow for dogs and for kids. I used to love playing in the snow and made so many happy memories. Now, I spend my winters in Florida and that suits me fine- 80 degrees, sunny, and make my memories at the beach.
ReplyDeleteI remember the burn from chilled hands thawing out - not nice.
DeleteThank goodness those two had spots or you would never have found them in all that snow.
ReplyDelete🤣😂
ReplyDeleteBuddy Liver Spots.. lol.
ReplyDeleteThe others all had black spots!
DeleteLove the snow you all have.... and the dogs...I know they are family
ReplyDeleteWe don't have snowfalls like that very often now and all those dogs are long gone, but live on in memory.
DeleteFog is all we've had in Georgia. I would love to have some snow for my dogs to play in. They've only seen it once, last year. Maybe we'll get lucky and have some this year. Take care and have a great week.
ReplyDeleteI hope your wish is fulfilled, but not too vigorously.
DeleteWhat a vivid January memory with so much snow
ReplyDeleteIt was a delightful few weeks.
DeleteLovely look-back photographs, so nice to see the dogs enjoying the snow.
ReplyDeleteI think rain may now be on the way for many ...
All the best Jan
Oh, yes, rain - relentless and grey. Never mind - the sun will shine again.
ReplyDeleteI got photos from my son, showing his dog Leia playing like crazy in the first snow she saw in her life and my grandson built his first snowman alone !! (without the help of Dad) Dad feels sad, as he feels rejected ! I forgot he did the same with his Dad ! The puberty !
ReplyDeleteIt's sometimes hard when children grow up.
ReplyDeleteSome great memories of that snowy Winter. All the dogs seem to have enjoyed playing in the soft white stuff.
