An extra pair of hands
Susannah is staying with us for a few days, and insisting on helping. We took her at her word. Barry hacked, I pruned, and Susannah cleared and graunched and mulched. The brown gardening waste bin is filling satisfactorily, and the trees will appreciate the mulch.
We got so much more done with that very useful extra pair of hands, and the strength and energy they’re attached to. She commented that it’s not a low-maintenance garden. It’s better than it was. When I remarked that we’d removed on arch, she said, ‘I knew there was something different, but I couldn’t think what it was.’
Well, we haven’t seen her since Christmas!
Gilbert went upstairs to our bed – he didn’t like the noise of the grauncher. Roxy relaxed, happy to be left to her own devices and not be asked to play by Susannah’s dog, Arthur. He wanted to come outside with us, and helped in the only way he could think of, by bringing some toys out and eviscerating them.
You know what they say, many hands make light work. It's always helpful to have an extra pair of hands.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is.
DeleteNice to have extra help. It always makes the work go faster. Even better if it's someone with youth on their side.
ReplyDeleteEspecially fit youth.
DeleteThis weekend P had to mow the three areas of grass on our property. The two at the top level were OK but the steep slope down to the front gate is always very challenging. He was exhausted by the time he had finished and admitted that he didn't know how much longer he could manage it.
ReplyDeleteCan you please send your Susannah up here???
I don't envy P. Susannah's very cheap to hire and thorough, too. I'll check her availability.
DeleteI learned a new word, “grauncher.” Now I will go and look up what it means!
ReplyDeleteYou may be misled by the dictionary definition.
ReplyDeleteI, too, do not know a grauncher, though I have an idea. It's always nice to have an extra pair of hands in the garden to make things go smoother and more quickly.
ReplyDeleteShe's very speedy - blink and you miss her!
ReplyDeleteFunny word to me, grauncher but I looked it up. Here it means incompetent mechanic, lol. But for you it meant a wonderful helper with some kind of grinding machine. Here they are called "chippers".
ReplyDeleteThe dictionary definition can be misleading, or maybe it's our habit of misusing words. 😉
DeleteNice to know the three of you got a lot done. It must feel quite satisfying.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see where you've been . . .
DeleteAlways make use of younger hands ! They sort of encourage you to work harder too. Sounds as though you made a lot of progress. That's a big woohoo
ReplyDeleteYoung people are certainly invigorating.
DeleteWe’ll need some extra hands in due course, likely next month when the gardening gets done.
ReplyDeleteThe garden seems to grow out of hand overnight - ours does, anyway.
DeleteIt's good when the extra hands are also adept! Not always the case in my experience.. What a good person to work so hard along with you. Are you simplifying the garden as you go? It's a lot of work to keep up with.
ReplyDeleteWe probably should simplify but probably won't.
DeleteI had never encountered the term "grauncher" before. Is that your family's nickname for Barry? The Grauncher...kind of sounds like The Grinch's brother.
ReplyDelete'Graunch' describes the noise the wood chipper makes.
DeleteSounds like a fun day. The image of Arthur helping by eviscerating his toys made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteThe stuffing adds something to the garden, and the squeaker looks good in the hay rack.
DeleteExtra help is always gratefully received ... it sounds like you managed to get a lot done, very pleasing.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
We aim to do some every day - but don't always succeed.
DeleteGlad you could avail yourselves of the extra help! (Including from Arthur. :) )
ReplyDeleteHe's a busy little dog.
DeleteIsn't it wonderfully satisfying to be able to look out and see the progress you've made? And I agree that an extra pair of hands is always welcome.
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising to realise how much you've done when you look out.
DeleteExtra hands mean so much sometimes!
ReplyDeleteThey certainly do.
DeleteAn extra set of hands is always so helpful..Amazing what you can get done when everyone is working together. Hope you all enjoy your visit and make some sweet memories doing so.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to work together.
DeleteI'm glad she was there to help and you got so much done.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was good.
DeleteI have first hand experience of extra hands helping me to. Ruby took down 1/4 of a tree today in 20 minutes and the mobile mechanic took down a problem fence and all the brush and removed a lot of chaos. with my help and thiers I have 3 containers of yard waste at the curb and a lot of tree limbs. Ruby is going to work with me Wed morning. its good to see your family and work done too.
ReplyDeleteThat's good to hear, and very satisfying.
DeleteAn extra pair of hands makes the world of difference doesn't it.
ReplyDeleteIt does.
DeleteAn extra pair of hands is especially welcome during gardening time. What a difference it can make!
ReplyDelete🌞
DeleteSounds like you got a lot done!-Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteWe did.
DeleteThe extra pair of hANDS MAKES WORK MUCH LIGHT.
ReplyDeleteIt does.
DeleteExtra hands are always appreciated.
ReplyDelete🌞
DeleteIt's that time of year and it is so nice to have help. Have a nice day today.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nicole.
DeleteBoy would I love an extra pair of young hands to help with garden stuff! My crew never thinks to offer, and I don't ask, thinking we will have to ask them enough later on as we get older.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of graunching. Off to look that up!
You might know it as a wood chipper.
DeleteA grauncher down here is a wood chipper. I sometimes envy you your lovely garden, but I am glad I don't have to do the work of maintaining. I am also glad you had Susannah to help this time.
ReplyDeleteThe garden is lovely in carefully curated parts!
DeleteBeautiful gardens don't happen by themselves. Great to have that extra help.
ReplyDeleteIt's all good to have help, anywhere!
DeleteSounds like a very rewarding day. I’m sure Susannah was happy to lend a hand.
ReplyDeleteShe was. 🌞
DeleteGilbert isn't the only dog that hates the chipper. We put earmuffs on Bro's dog😂🤣
ReplyDeleteAww . . . 🐶
DeleteI rarely turn down help when it’s offered these days
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
Very wise.
DeleteNice that you got some extra helping hands plus you got to spend some time together.
ReplyDeleteSpending time together is always a bonus.
ReplyDeleteSo nice that she was willing to help
ReplyDeleteWe're just happy to see her and let her have time to relax.
DeleteHow would Susannah like to spend some time in a garden in Nod???
ReplyDeleteOpen to all offers!
