An extra pair of hands

An extra pair of hands

Susannah is staying with us for a few days, and insisting on helping. We took her at her word. Barry hacked, I pruned, and Susannah cleared and graunched and mulched. The brown gardening waste bin is filling satisfactorily, and the trees will appreciate the mulch.

We got so much more done with that very useful extra pair of hands, and the strength and energy they’re attached to.  She commented that it’s not a low-maintenance garden. It’s better than it was. When I remarked that we’d removed on arch, she said, ‘I knew there was something different, but I couldn’t think what it was.’

Well, we haven’t seen her since Christmas!

Gilbert went upstairs to our bed – he didn’t like the noise of the grauncher. Roxy relaxed, happy to be left to her own devices and not be asked to play by Susannah’s dog, Arthur. He wanted to come outside with us, and helped in the only way he could think of, by bringing some toys out and eviscerating them.

  1. You know what they say, many hands make light work. It's always helpful to have an extra pair of hands.

  2. Nice to have extra help. It always makes the work go faster. Even better if it's someone with youth on their side.

  3. This weekend P had to mow the three areas of grass on our property. The two at the top level were OK but the steep slope down to the front gate is always very challenging. He was exhausted by the time he had finished and admitted that he didn't know how much longer he could manage it.
Can you please send your Susannah up here???

    1. I don't envy P. Susannah's very cheap to hire and thorough, too. I'll check her availability.

  4. I learned a new word, “grauncher.” Now I will go and look up what it means!

  5. You may be misled by the dictionary definition.

  6. I, too, do not know a grauncher, though I have an idea. It's always nice to have an extra pair of hands in the garden to make things go smoother and more quickly.

  8. Funny word to me, grauncher but I looked it up. Here it means incompetent mechanic, lol. But for you it meant a wonderful helper with some kind of grinding machine. Here they are called "chippers".

    1. The dictionary definition can be misleading, or maybe it's our habit of misusing words. 😉

  12. It's good when the extra hands are also adept! Not always the case in my experience.. What a good person to work so hard along with you. Are you simplifying the garden as you go? It's a lot of work to keep up with.

    1. We probably should simplify but probably won't.

  13. I had never encountered the term "grauncher" before. Is that your family's nickname for Barry? The Grauncher...kind of sounds like The Grinch's brother.

  21. I have first hand experience of extra hands helping me to. Ruby took down 1/4 of a tree today in 20 minutes and the mobile mechanic took down a problem fence and all the brush and removed a lot of chaos. with my help and thiers I have 3 containers of yard waste at the curb and a lot of tree limbs. Ruby is going to work with me Wed morning. its good to see your family and work done too.

  28. Boy would I love an extra pair of young hands to help with garden stuff! My crew never thinks to offer, and I don't ask, thinking we will have to ask them enough later on as we get older.
I have never heard of graunching. Off to look that up!
