Friday 55 Flash Fiction

‘I’ll put the rubbish out,’ he said. ‘I’ll just be a minute’ and with that he disappeared for half an hour. When he came downstairs again he headed for the front door.

 I said nothing, just waited. He returned, looking rather sheepish. ‘I see you’ve already done it.’

Time and rubbish wait for no man!

Friday 55 Flash Fiction Racing


His eyes narrowed as he concentrated on negotiating the hairpin bends on the world-famous racing circuit. He needed to keep a clear head – victory was close yet one small miscalculation could result in defeat.
Suddenly, a voice interrupted his thoughts. 'Teatime,' called his mother. He sighed and clambered onto his chair.

It was a beautiful morning so she decided to walk. Everyone seemed happy. She noticed many people, particularly men, turning to smile as they passed. When she reached her work her friend pulled her to one side and whispered something. Her smile faded. She had walked to work with her skirt tucked into her knickers.

Dull roaring invaded her dreams. Her handsome swain became a bully. She jerked awake, listening in the dark as the clanking approached. She didn't believe in ghosts.

Then she remembered, swore, leapt from her bed. She had intended putting the rubbish out earlier.

Too late! Bank Holiday refuse collectors had gone.

'Lovely,' said the workman as he took the mug.

'One sugar, wasn't it?' she smiled.

He nodded, sipped, spluttered and put the mug down.

'Must get on,' he muttered.

Back in the kitchen she saw the salt and knew what she'd done.

She made an appointment with the optician immediately.

Don’t wear diamonds in daylight -
It’s frightfully common you know,
Don’t wear diamonds in daylight –
It’s far too obvious a show.

Keep your diamonds for evening –
That’s when they sparkle the best!
A diamond ring on your finger
Suffices for daytime dress.
