The ‘phone rang . . .

The ‘phone rang . . .

. . . on Monday night. It was Callum calling to ask if we were available for a visit. ‘Of course,’ we said. ‘When?’ thinking it would be at the weekend.

‘I’m just round the corner,’ he said. Actually, he was about fifteen minutes away, but close enough to pass for ‘just around the corner.’ He was in the area for business and having to stay overnight in a hotel.

Roxy and Gilbert were overjoyed to see him.

He stayed for a couple of hours and he and Barry set the world to rights in their usual fashion. Then he left for a meeting.

‘I hope it goes well,’ I said.

‘We’re meeting over a pint,’ he said.

That was bound to be successful, I thought.

These unplanned visits are such a welcome surprise.

  1. I like to have an hour's warning so I can clean the living room and the kitchen :)

  2. I like to have warning too, so at least the bed can be smoothed and newspapers removed to the back porch.

    1. If we have too much warning, I go into a flatspin, which is not good.

  3. I think I also fall into that hour's notice crowd! But still a surprise visit is sometimes nice.

    1. Everyone knows we live in a tip, so why pretend otherwise?

  5. I love an unplanned visit, no notice required, just come on in, put your feet up and join us in some food and drinks!

    1. Visitors come to see you, not the state of your house, unless you're trying to sell your house, of course.

  6. Gran didn't have a bed for her grandson? Perhaps his accommodation was paid for, or he didn't want to put you to trouble. I'd want a week's notice to give lots of time for me to panic and mull over what could go wrong.

    1. Callum knows he can always stay here but, yes, his accommodation had been arranged for him.

  7. How lovely! Enough notice to put the kettle on but no time to fuss about hoovering, etc. Just taking things as they are. xx

    1. Exactly! Take us as you find us or don't take us at all.

  8. I love unplanned visits. I guess that it just depends on whether you are flexible or not….my husband likes to know what’s happening each day and prefers order in his life…but I’m happy to drop everything should anyone call!

    1. True - we offered him food, but he was eating later. No problem.

  10. Nothing nicer than the comment 'are you in', very few family would be just passing here, more like 'I'm in your area'

    1. It was. We don't see our family much, so it's nice when it happens.

  15. What a lovely surprise! Those spontaneous visits are the best, aren't they? It's so nice to have those unexpected connections.

  16. That is a wonderful kind of visit. Seems they would happen more often in the 'old days.' Today, not so much. But they are treasures when they do.

  23. If Callum and Barry were putting the world to rights, does that mean that they advised Trump to surrender stolen Ukrainian territory to Putin and to build a leisure resort on the wasteland that is Gaza?

  25. Fun! At least with family there's not as much pressure to play "host" and have the place spotless. (Not that I'm insinuating your place WASN'T spotless. :) )
