Head to toe
Sit with a group of very young children and very soon one of them will remark on your shoes, often touching or stroking them. Feet are important and interesting.
Gilbert is no exception to this rule. In addition, he likes appropriating items of clothing belonging to his humans.
This morning, Barry’s flat cap mysteriously appeared in Gilbert’s bed. I didn’t see Gilbert carrying it so I don’t know how it got there. It was being used as a pillow. Dogs do like pillows.
A short while later, Gilbert carefully picked up one of my trainers and carried it to a sunny spot by the patio door, where he proceeded to pay close attention to it. I can’t really describe it as chewing, although chewing noises were discernible – it was more like sucking. I retrieved it (who’s the Labrador retriever here?) and put it out of reach.
I next saw Gilbert proudly transporting my other trainer to his bed to join the flat cap. He lay down contentedly and gently started chewing it. I think his method is to lick first, then ‘mouth’ it before engaging his teeth.

He looked so happy and innocent that I had to take a few photographs before removing these items of apparel before any harm came to them.
He has history with shoes. Here’s a photograph of him sleeping with a pair of Barry’s trainers.

DeleteGilbert is adorable. I loved yesterday's video of him shredding paper (complete with pig grunts).

DeleteMy cats also demand the long pats, usually when I'm in the most awkward position possible. Sweet Gilbert! He wants a little bit of each human to snuggle with :)
ReplyDeleteBoth Gilbert & Jellicoe are just adorable Janice!! Oh how precious they are. Currently my ginger girl is asleep on my gardening shoes, which are covered in mud from this mornings attempt to garden! It is surely not that comfortable. xx

DeleteGood idea to take the shoes away. My dad once minded our dog when we had to move interstate, he had Max for about a month during which time he allowed him free run of the town (bad dad!) and allowed him to chew old slippers. I was quite cross about both of those and dad said "It's just old slippers" and I said but Max can't tell the difference between old slippers and brand new good shoes! which is true, to a dog a shoe is a shoe. We never cured him of the running, he could jump up at a six foot fence and scrabble over it and one day when he ran we lost him forever. We'd forgotten to put our new address and phone number on his collar.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right about the shoes. How sad that Max ran off - not knowing what happened to him must have been so sad. When we had our first Dalmatian, her breeder advised us to never teach her to jump fences, as she would easily have got over an 8' fence. Some dogs do it naturally.

DeleteMy grandson called me this morning, (I am back from my cruise) and told me that puppy Leia makes a lot of mess, I got the impression that Miss Leia is more the dog of my son ! I told him that at that age he was also tiring !
