For
decoration only
If I look
after it very carefully it may grow to 90cms – that’s nearly 3’ in old money.
Sadly, it
will never be edible but isn’t toxic to animals, just in case they decide to
sample it.
Apparently, when the fruit drops off it can be propagated.
At present, we are trying to propagate a ‘proper’ pineapple from a ‘proper’ pineapple. I’m not really very hopeful, though. The last time we tried, nice new leaves grew but no roots and the thing eventually mouldered and died.
We are enjoying fresh pineapple at the moment - very indulgent.
It's not good for tooth enamel, but then many fruits are not good for the teeth, so we'll take that gamble.
There is nothing nicer for sweets in summer than slices of fresh pineapple, laid out on a glass platter. The children love it because they can legitimately eat the slices with their fingers!
ReplyDeleteBut I am not sure about decoration. An intact pineapple looks jaggard, totally unlike paw paws, mangoes or cantaloupes
Oh, yes, finger foods are best!
DeleteI have also tried growing a pineapple from a top, with no success. I'm thinking the northeast climate where I live is just not conducive. Good luck with your next attempt!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Molly. Ours didn't even make it outside.
DeletePineapple ornaments were a bit of a thing here several years ago. I quite liked them, but they seem to be history now.
ReplyDeleteWe're behind the curve, as always ;-)
DeleteI love pineapple but can no longer eat fresh slices, it stings my mouth now. I can still eat it cooked on pizza though. I tried growing one too, years ago now, but it just rotted and died.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if anyone is ever successful . . .
DeleteGood luck with starting one from a top. Try dusting it with rooting hormone, or dipping it in willowbark tea to encourage roots.
ReplyDeleteHadn't thought of that - thank you :-)
ReplyDeleteFresh pineapple is a delight.
ReplyDeleteMouthwatering!
DeleteIt is, indeed.
DeleteThat plant is gorgeous even if it's not edible.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the pineapple propagation! And now I'm craving the fresh taste of pineapple :-) xxx
It will be fun trying, anyway x
