Your payment has been declined

Your payment has been declined

Those stark words can create momentary panic, usually quickly resolved. Equally worrying was the message I received this morning – ‘Unfortunately payment could not be taken for your order.’

The delivery driver was at the door, explaining that the goods had not been paid for. I could not believe it!

Quickly, I went online to rectify matters but had to ‘phone a customer help line. Cue mind-numbing musak and the oft-repeated message about all their operatives being overloaded with customers’ calls and an assurance that my call was important to them.

Meanwhile, the driver was calling his line manager or someone and then handed me his ‘phone, as he had managed to make contact, but reception was poor. Despite being only a short distance from a mast, reception here has always been hit and miss.

Eventually, the driver was given permission to heave the crates out of the van and deliver them to us, because we were ‘known and valued customers.’

A few weeks ago, my credit card had been compromised and I was sent a new one. I had forgotten to update my payment details with the supermarket, but strangely, I had had deliveries since I’d received the new card. I was most apologetic to the poor driver, who had been significantly delayed by my declined payment. He was very pleasant about it, and we do ‘know’ each other, in a manner of speaking.

I apologised profusely to the support team when I contacted them to pay the bill. Immediately afterwards, I updated my details online.

All should be well now!

  3. Any similar words make me think of identity theft and worry about my account being emptied should someone get hold of my card details. Thank goodness your things were delivered and you updated your details right away.

    1. I only noticed something was amiss a few weeks ago when I checked my statement and found a transaction I didn't recognise. It is worrying when there are so many clever crooks around.

  4. What a stressful experience that must have been! It's amazing how quickly a routine delivery can turn into a moment of panic. I’m glad to hear that the driver was understanding and that you were able to resolve the issue, even if it meant navigating through the frustrating world of customer service. It’s a reminder of how important it is to keep payment details updated, especially after changes like receiving a new card. I hope your future deliveries go smoothly without any hiccups!

I just shared a post. Check it out

    1. I felt sorry for the driver. Their time is limited and some people get very cross if their deliveries are delayed.

  5. I am sure I've used, 'and we do ‘know’ each other, in a manner of speaking', as a euphemism. I've experienced the same as you when I received a new credit card. Payments for various things kept happening even though the card number was different, but then with embarrassment, it did not work when I was trying to pay someone face to face.

  6. It seems to take some companies a while to catch up. Amazon is very quick to inform of any discrepancies.

  7. It's a heart stopping moment, even though you know you have the funds, and it's annoying when the retailer says' oh that's always happening, it's our machine'

    1. It can be embarrassing, too, especially if you're in a shop with impatient customers behind you!

  9. Oh, your post has only just popped up in my feed!
Your experience was similar to the one I had in the Boots store yesterday... that heart stopping moment when you fear that your card has been compromised.

  11. The delivery driver was very helpful, and patient, as things were successfully sorted ... but a heart stopping moment at first because there are so many scams around at the moment.

    All the best Jan

    1. Delivery drivers have a thankless task for not much reward and he could have been grumpy, but wasn't.

  13. I think those words can send you into a bit of a panic. I worked in a shop, was the bookkeeper, went to buy something and my card was declined. Really embarrassing. Turned out there was what the bank thought was a fraudulent charge on the account, and they had blocked my card!

    1. Fraud is big business and I'm always pleased when a company investigates. It hasn't happened often but it's good to know someone is being observant. Embarrassing for you, though.

  14. My inbox is always full of alarming notices. My payment has been declined for Netflix. For Sirius. For Amazon Prime. For Sam's Club. Costco. The ubiquitous Car's Extended Warranty. My payment did not go through for an item I ordered. So many things. Except that I don't have subscriptions to any of these things.

    1. I felt really bad for the driver. Delivery drivers have so much to contend with in this locality - there are always new sets of roadworks everywhere, so they have enough delays to cope with, without idiots like me.
