Advent candle
Gillian has given me an Advent candle. I always intend to have an Advent wreath and an Advent candle but December creeps up on me before I realise it so I'm very grateful to my first-born - thank you Gillian!
Beautiful candle and candleholder. I first learned about the 4 candles tradition last year from a children's book and this year I see it come alive in blogland. I think I'll add it to our household traditions next year.
It is a lovely tradition which we came across when living in Germany many years ago. It's so good to have traditions which refer to the original meaning of Christmas :-)
How does it work? Do you leave it burning day and night? That could be a bit dangerous. I see there are numbers marked on it so maybe you just burn one day's worth and snuff it out until the following day? I don't think I've ever seen one before.
The idea is to burn a numbered section each day up to and including Christmas Eve. I wasn't keeping a close enough eye on it though so can't burn it again until 3rd December/ Oops! The Advent wreath is a circular arrangement of greenery with four candles representing the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. One candle is burnt for each of the Sundays.
