Sleepy
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Is there a sleepy bug? If so, I’ve caught it. I have become of late a drifter into drowsiness, a slider into slumbrousness, a toppler into torpor. Am I entering hibernation?
I believed, erroneously, that badgers hibernate, but have just discovered that they enter a state of lethargy for several weeks when it is very cold. The only mammals to hibernate in UK are bats, hedgehogs and dormice. They may wake briefly to relieve themselves or if there is unusually warm weather, or because it is so cold that ice crystals may begin forming in their blood.
What really is the difference between torpor and hibernation? Hibernation is a condition entered into voluntarily, a bit like marriage, and lasts for several months, while torpor is involuntary and lasts for a shorter period, like imprisonment.
My snoozes are mostly involuntary and I miss the ends of programmes, or the end of a sentence I am reading. What a waste of time!
There's definitely a sleeping bug! I have it and find myself dozing off several times a day. I think it's the cooler days and mornings we are still having despite it being springtime here.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting. It's colder here though it shouldn't make any difference as the house is warm.
DeleteIce crystals in the blood? Amazing. Sometimes I feel like that's happening if I don't have enough blankets on, but I feel for the animals to whom it really IS happening.
ReplyDeleteIt must be a horrible feeling.
DeleteRead books with shorter sentences!
ReplyDeleteCheers! Gail.
Brilliant! Thanks, Gail.
DeleteHa, I have always been slow and sleepy. My dear late friend used to call me JC Dormouse.
ReplyDeleteThat's lovely - like the dormouse in Alice in Wonderland.
DeleteOn the odd occasions I plonk down in front of the TV in the evening I, too, am finding that I get to the end of the programme or evening and realise that there are 'bits missing'. After nearly 80 years I think my body is telling me something.
ReplyDeleteI think the solution is to not sit down:-)
DeleteNot at all a waste. If you need it, you need it and nowadays one can usually catch up with programmes later or reread the sentence :-) .
ReplyDeleteGo with the flow, that's what I say. xx
That's my husband's attitude, too. x x x
DeleteAll behind to~day..just got back from town....

We seem to have forgotten how to se seasonal and keep the same hours summer and winter - it's not natural. Perhaps a few hours more sleep at this time of year is normal.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it is.
DeleteI usually get a bit of the droopy eyes when I read late afternoon. Sometimes I give in for 10 minutes, but that is all I ever do. I feel better immediately though.
ReplyDeleteForty winks is meant to revive so it clearly does for you. x
ReplyDeleteOh dear, how annoying!
ReplyDeleteIt is, a bit. I hope you're resting, though.
DeleteI did laugh at reading Willie's comment Janice ... & I also laughed at your comparison with Hibernation & marriage ... & torpor & imprisonment! Rather apt descriptions.
ReplyDeleteYou can always rely on Willie for a different take on things:-)
DeleteI thought everyone did as you described. I can drift off with my eyes open.
ReplyDeleteThat's clever - I thought it was only babies that did that - and gave their parents the heeby-jeebies.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about the sleepy bug, but that's exactly how I usually feel this time of year! Yawn! xxx
ReplyDeletePerhaps it is a seasonal effect . . . x x x
