Friday
Friday was graduation day for my third grandson, Louis. He has worked extremely hard for three years to achieve his Physics degree. I don’t know what the future will hold for him, but it has been a privilege to watch him and his older siblings growing up.
It will be several years before my three youngest grandsons have to decide whether they will go to university and what they will study. Who knows what options will be available to them?
Friday
also marked the end of term and the end of the academic year in Berkshire. My fourth
grandson, Frankie, has finished primary school and must now move on from being
a big fish in a little pond to becoming a tiny fish in a markedly larger lake. His
cousin, Isla, my eldest great-granddaughter, breaks up on Monday in Dorset, and, like him,
will move to a much bigger school in September.
Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles watch with hope and interest as all these young people move forward to the next phase of their lives.
My grandson found the same little-fish-big-pond dilemma at university. His lecturers didn't even know his name, never mind not knowing if he was doing well. (His tutors did, of course).
ReplyDeleteIt's a considerable shock to many, especially the very bright, who suddenly find there are others even cleverer than they are. I've heard mothers say how taken aback their clever children were.
DeleteSuch momentous changes for the young people. Congratulations to Louis who is a very handsome young man. I hope he finds much success in what must be a highly challenging field. Frankie looks to be full of life.

ReplyDeleteYes, the fortunate do get see great grandchildren grow up and hopefully succeed, and worry if they are troubled souls. You have a right to be proud of your offspring and theirs and theirs again, with part of them being you (a nice part of you hopefully).

DeleteIt's a big time of the year for so many, Will starts juniors, George starts school and Molly is in pre-school all in September.

ReplyDeleteI’ve attended three graduation ceremonies, for my children, and really enjoyed them…two at Exeter and one at Winchester ( in the cathedral). My eldest grandchild is only 13 but recently announced that she wants to study criminology at Uni. We shall see! She’s very focused and works extremely hard. My second eldest grandchild is the same age as your Frankie and so is off to pastures new in Sept. Exciting times for them! 😁
There are so many choices for students now. Criminology would be interesting. Your granddaughter is clear-thinking.

ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that your area's schools followed a different schedule than most in the USA, where two plus months of summer vacation is the rule.
ReplyDeleteSchool terms differ in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and can vary between counties in England, though usually only by a few days.
