Lisa asks contributors to write a book blurb inspired by an
illustration. The challenge is to write an enticing blurb in 150 words or less that
will encourage potential readers to buy the book.
Here is this week's illustration followed by my contribution.

Alexis in
the World
The Biggins children walk home by
the canal every day. One day they hear a voice calling to them from the water. Looking
down they find a strange female creature beseeching them to help her onto dry
land. Taken in by her laments they pull her from the canal whereupon she begs
food and shelter. Feeling sorry for her they take her to their house and hide her
in the attic. They name her Alexis.
What follows is a series of increasingly
bizarre misadventures that lead to problems in the entire neighbourhood as the
children try to cope with Alexis’ inquisitive spirit. Will Alexis learn to conform or is she
destined always to be a troublesome outsider? Will she ever return to her
watery home?

words including title)
I hope Alexis takes the children on numerous adventures and never goes home.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Janice. I'm intrigued and repelled at once by this "strange female creatured" they call Alexis, and by the trouble she causes.
ReplyDeleteWho or what is she? If she conforms, will she fit in? I'd have to buy the book in order to find out!

You've hooked me, Janice!
ReplyDeleteThis has the ingredients for a terrific children's story, and you've got me wondering about Alexis. My first thought was mermaid, but I think that's too obvious. You've got something else up your sleeve. But what?!
ReplyDeleteYou are quite a good writer. I enjoyed your blurb. :)
ReplyDeleteYour blurb would have got me buying the book.
ReplyDeleteYou're so good at this :-)
ReplyDeleteIf I remember it correctly this has a lot in common with John Wyndham's 'Chocky' - one of my children's long-term favourites, so this could well be a winner.
ReplyDeleteOkay...I want to read this book to find out about Alexis. and the kids.
ReplyDelete...So...does she ever return to her watery home?
I could see my granddaughter devouring a story like this. Good blurb.
ReplyDeleteI'd buy the book if this was the teaser.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't take much for an adventure to start!
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived near a lake when I was growing up :/
ReplyDeleteAn intriguing plot. Wonder if Alexis will invite the boys to visit her home?
ReplyDeletewe used to drop a leaf at one side, and then do exactly as the kids are doing, and wait for the leaf to float by.
ReplyDeleteRight, when is the book coming out? And will it be exclusively for children or cross-genre?
ReplyDeleteWonderful Janice - I think you could link this to the week's Mag (formerly Magpie Tales) too!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
Isabel
But what 'hook' should start their story?
