The kindness of strangers

Loaded in the back of the car this afternoon were bags of glass jars and bottles. Some were in proper bottle carriers, the rest in shopping bags. They were resting against the dog crates. When I arrived at the bottle bank and started to open the tailgate, some of them rolled out and fell to the ground. Fortunately, none of them broke. A bottle prevented the tailgate fully opening.

I picked up the fallers and posted them through the bottle bank holes and as I returned to the car, a young man called out, ‘Do you want any help? Are the rest going to fall out?’

I said I’d soon find out and opened the tailgate fully. Everything remained in place and I smiled and thanked the young man for his help. It was only a little thing, an offer from a stranger, but it cheered me up immensely.

There are more good people than bad in this world. J

  1. There is so much misery in the world that even a small act of kindness refreshes our belief in the goodness of (some) humanity. I always offer help to elderlies hobbling down the street because it can make a difference.

  4. That was good of him. Most people are good people just a few oddballs who spoil things

    1. It's sad that some seem to find pleasure in being unpleasant.

  5. People are good, sadly our news only likes to tell about the other sort.

  8. That was indeed very friendly. I noticed that since I belong to the antiques, there are a lot of people, young old, man women who propose to help me putting my things in the bonnet. First I was offended and thought Do I look so old and frail ? The mirror says something else, but that's the mirror !

    1. Sometimes offers of help, however well intentioned, can offend ;-)

  9. There is so much good in the world, yet, sadly, the press seems to focus on the opposite! If only it could promote the good more often, I’m sure that we would all feel so much better!
A random act of kindness and a smile, can make all the difference! 😁

    1. I suppose we might miss the 'drama' of sad, bad, serious news

  10. So seldom do I get to experience this kind of care or concern. When I do it makes me feel good for a few days. Nice you got some attention.

    1. Sometimes people are just too busy to notice others, sadly.

  12. That's 2 blog posts i read today that commented on acts of kindness. It really does glue the world together doesn't it. Perhaps we should all make the effort to report on it more often.

  13. “There are more good people than bad people,
and overall there’s more that’s good in the world
    than there is that’s bad.
We just need to hear about it, we just need to see it.”

I would help anyone at a bottle bank..providing
    the bottles were full...HeHe! Well...otherwise
    what's the point...I jest of course...! :O).

  15. It's important to be alert to those opportunities where we might offer encouragement as this young man did.

    1. It also shows that some parents are still teaching their children to be considerate.

  16. I always giggle when we walk to our village, we cross a busy road and cars always stop, then I realise they stop for a little old lady, ME! how did that happen.

  17. It's always a shock to catch sight of oneself and realise that the young person inside is not reflected on the outside!
