Discovering emojis!
Kathy, on ‘The Second Half of My Life’ taught many of us something interesting. Many people enjoy using emojis to enliven their writing. Thus far, I have had to rely on punctuation to achieve what I want - ; and – and ) for a smile, for example, or a cut and paste job from somewhere which never quite fits. There is a way to have an emoji keyboard pop up. On a Mac, it’s Control + Command + Space. On Windows, it’s the Windows logo key + . (full stop or period)
I couldn’t find the Windows logo key on my keyboard and then I noticed that my F7 key had a smiley face on it. So, I pressed it and hey presto! a menu of emojis popped up. ππ
Very pleased with this, I tried again later, with no success πso I’m back to punctuation emojis again and whatever Blogger offers on the ‘new post’ page.
Rats! πππ
When you receive the emojis, does the brain actually read the smile or tears etc?
ReplyDeleteI hope so, or there'd be no point!
DeleteI am sure the writer has a reason to add the emojis. But I was asking how the recipient "reads" them. My eyes certainly see them but does the brain respond to them?
DeleteI can only speak for myself, but I think my brain responds to them as they are intended. I'll have to pay more attention, to make sure.
DeleteSometimes if you right click on the mouse, a box will pop up & it will have an emoji button in it which you then click on & all the emojis will pop up - this is how I do it but don't ask me anymore about it as I am the most untech-savvy person around ππππ (it worked today!!)
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting, Julie. It doesn't work on my mouse - you must have a magic one ;-)
DeleteI didn't know about the Windows key and full stop. I usually right click and select emoji, then start typing an emoji suggestion. It is far from perfect, eg it won't give me an emoji if I type 'poking out tongue'. Tongue alone brings up four options, as I've just discovered. π More than once I've used an incorrect emoji, so I find it best to leave them alone.
ReplyDeleteI think that's what Julie, above, uses, but it doesn't work for me.
DeleteI like emojis, but think they can be overdone with some people scattering them like inappropriate apstrophes. π
ReplyDeleteThat would be me, so it's as well that they've disappeared for me.
DeleteMy granddaughter's text messages are often just emotional usually leaving me baffled.
ReplyDeleteSome I don't understand and others I choose not to.
DeleteI use them sometimes as it often helps to show that a remark is intended as a joke and is not a criticism, for example. I must try the keyboard shortcut on my laptop...thanks for the tip! πππ€π
ReplyDeleteThat's how I like to use them. I'm pleased it's working for you. Now, why the blazes isn't it doing so for me?
DeleteI use them on WhatsApp all the time, just for fun, I've not used them on blogger before.
ReplyDeleteThey're easy to use on WhatsApp, aren't they?
DeleteI never use emojis other than on Instagram or texts. I believe I've seen them on Blogger when I'm writing a new post but wouldn't know how to insert them on say a comment so thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteI hope it works for you. I must investigate and see if I can understand what I've done . . .
DeleteYour "Adventures in Emojis" sounds very like me and my tablet - by complete accident I will find a feature I like, and then never be able to replicate it! I like a couple of basic emojis but they are so small I find it hard to decipher most of them. I do overuse the :) and :D ones.
ReplyDeleteI can never remember how I've arrived at something and should write down the process, but I never do . . . sigh!
DeleteMy computer is too serious to have smilies in it ! I have to smile like this :) lol !
ReplyDeleteI have to return to that, I think!
DeleteI'd no idea and have always used punctuation emoji's on my Windows pc so far. And my F7 key doesn't have a smiley face either. I think I'll leave well enough alone :-) xxx
ReplyDeleteIt was a short-lived celebration for me :-(
DeleteThe windows key and period at the same time worked πππI try only to use the basic ones as I'm afraid of missing a hidden meaning like - um, the eggplant one.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm pleased it worked for you :-)
ReplyDeleteI do occasionally use emojis.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed the grandchildren love them :)
All the best Jan
They're fun!
DeleteI am running PC Windows 11. If I right-click in a comments area, I get a pop-up menu with the top option to be Emoji. If the comment area accepts GIFs, I can post those, too.
ReplyDeleteπ I think I may have found the answer. Time will tell.π
DeleteππThe right click worked for me! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI seem to have found another way . . . π€
DeleteThanks for the shout out. I'm sorry to hear that your emoji solution was short lived. On my keyboard the Windows key is two to the left from the space bar, and has a Windows logo (four squares with lines separating them) on it.
ReplyDeleteI ❤️ an emoji - but you may have noticed that already πππππ
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
I may be able to play after all . . . ✔ππ
DeleteHi Janice - Rats and Emojis ... I ignore both - tis easier ... but I don't have kidlets of various ages - so no temptations there! Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteBlimey i didn't realize they were difficult to access. There just seems to be a smiley face inside two curving arrows at the top of my digital keyboard and it toggles between text and emojis. I must turn on the laptop and see what that has.
ReplyDeleteI thought keyboards must be pretty standard, but apparently I was wrong . . . again! π€
