Timing

My parents’ wedding anniversary was 16th April. One year, when I was about seven years old, they were having a small party to celebrate and I piped up with, ‘They were married on 16th April, and I was born two days later.’ This caused some mirth, which I didn’t understand at the time.
It was my second youngest grandson’s birthday on Sunday. Charlie is now nine years old. Our wedding anniversary is the day after his birthday. I don’t think he’s likely to make a similar observation.
August 12th is the beginning of the grouse shooting season, but, as Barry is not a shooting man, the date completely passes him by. It’s only been fifty-seven years, though, so there’s still time for the date to lodge in his brain.
Before we were married, we did once eat a grouse, or maybe it was a pheasant, that he had shot. That was the only time, and I remember little of it other than the lead shot still inside the bird.
I watched some of the Olympic shooting. That’s all about timing, too. I noticed that many of the competitors were left-handed, but I don’t recall the archers being other than right-handed. Some say it’s an advantage, while others dismiss it. I am just simply impressed by all the Olympian athletes and everything they’ve had to do to achieve Olympic standing.
I’ve just seen a lovely sight. The Chinese weight-lifting gold medallist, Li Wenwen, pulled her coach onto the stage and picked him up. That was such a delightful thing to see, and they were both so, so happy.
Happy Anniversary! I got married on Guy Fawkes Day just so I would never forget the date lol
ReplyDeleteVery wise. Christmas Eve is another good one!
DeleteHappy anniversary to you both! xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joy :-)
DeleteHappy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteGrouse shooting must have been more discussed during my mother's childhood. She was born on 13 August, and often said she was glad it wasn't the day before as she might have been nicknamed 'Grousy Maureen'!
So many moments to treasure in the Paris Olympics.
Cheers, Gail.
Lucky for your mother - that would not have been a welcome nickname.
DeleteI got married on a date chosen by my husband, who thought it was my birthday so he would never forget either one. I had to tell him my birthday was two days later.
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny! It took my husband several decades to fix my birthday in his mind and he still has to think quite hard. Strange, for a man whose memory for other things is so acute!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary
ReplyDeleteI saw the photo of the weightlifter lifting her coach, heartwarming.

It really made me smile.
DeleteHope you enjoy your anniversary, whatever you may be doing.
ReplyDeleteHere's to many more to come.
It's a fine day and the sun is shining - can't ask for more than that :-)
DeleteHappy Anniversary. Hope you have a good celebration
ReplyDeleteYour Parents anniversary is my birthday date - a good day for everything!
April is a good month, despite what T.S. Eliot believed!
DeleteHappy anniversary, hope you don't have to hint too hard. I worked with a lovely old man (well I was young), called Mr Jack Richardson, he was high up in the company I worked for. On the 12th of August, he always wrote the date as 'The glorious 12th', every year. Your post do bring back the most wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteHe remembered! He has a reminder (fairly recent addition!) on his watch or 'phone or iPad or something - probably all three, knowing him!
DeleteHi Janice - happy anniversary to you two ... and yes I've noticed quite a few left-handed people recently. I have to say I love a roast pheasant dinner - once a year ... but later on in early Autumn. For some reason I asked for grouse for one of my birthday parties in Cornwall when I was a teenager ... cheers HIlary
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely birthday choice. I take it that it was for eating, not keeping as a pet ;-))
DeleteHuman bonds is most beautiful
ReplyDeleteWe're good for each other, which is just as well ;-)
DeleteFun post. Happy Anniversary! 💐🍾🥂
ReplyDeleteThank you:-)
DeleteThat's hilarious, out of the mouths of babes and our children. My parents were married on April 16th too. Another enjoyable post, thank you so much and Happy Anniversary to you and Barry.
ReplyDeleteI remember being so pleased at making the connection.:-)
DeleteHappy anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThank you :-)
DeleteHappy Anniversary, and a Happy Birthday to Charlie!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents' birthdays were on 22 and 23 December respectively, my grandfather's was the 23rd and, being one year older than my grandmother, they always said they were the same age for one day only. Funny that I remember that. They both passed away a long time ago. xxx
It's funny how dates remain in the memory. Important to us and to them, but to few others.
DeleteHappy Anniversary! Hopefully Barry is feeling a bit better and even if he remembers no important date, he'll remember how well you probably will cook a meal for him. Grouse or no grouse.
ReplyDeleteHe he - my cooking will remain in his memory for all the wrong reasons. I'm an inconsistent cook at the best of times . . .
DeleteHappy Anniversary.. and Happy 9th to Charlie as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hena. I hope all is well with you and yours now.
DeleteWow! Congratulations! That is something to boast about.
ReplyDeleteThank you :-)
DeleteHappy Anniversary! Had to smile at your younger self's comment :D I've never had pheasant or grouse and had goose only once - it was extremely oily! But I've had rabbit and deer (my dad used to hunt). To think nowadays I am almost completely vegetarian!
ReplyDeleteI've never had goose - my mother always warned me it was very fatty. I had rabbit once, after a school visit to the zoo, so it didn't go down well.
