Autumn leaves
It’s a bright, cool morning, the sun glancing off the russet and golden leaves of the oak trees. Now and then a few leaves float down, some settling among the branches of trees and the stems of spent summer flowers, others joining their fellows on the ground. A rich carpet of leaves is laid, deep and crisp, a pleasure to see, a joy to shuffle through. Occasionally, a breeze springs up and a flurry of colour spins through the air.
Soon, the trees will be almost bare, revealing their skeletons and their squirrel paths. Some dry and darkened leaves will remain, obdurate, until spring kindles new growth.
‘Autumn Leaves’ is the English version of a French song, ‘Les Feuilles mortes,’ which was composed in 1945 by Hungarian composer Joseph Kosma. Jacques Prévert wrote the French lyrics and Johnny Mercer wrote the English words. The English version is somewhat shorter than the French.
It has been recorded commercially more than a thousand times. Singers include Bing Crosby, Doris Day, and Keely Smith. The version here is by Nat King Cole, whose perfect diction and mellow voice perfectly suit the song.
oh that was lovely, Mr. Velvet Voice!
ReplyDeleteI love his voice. It's strange to think that he smoked to keep it sounding that way.
DeleteHis voice is so smooth and reflects the melancholy of the season. The one thing I do like about the trees being bare is that you can see where birds nest were and where the birds thrived.
ReplyDeleteI like to see the bones of the trees and you're right, the nests show up clearly.
DeleteThat's a beautiful song, he has a lovely voice, mellow.
ReplyDeleteI could listen to his voice for hours.
DeleteIt's a pleasure to hear this again; what a lovely voice for that touch of melancholy the song brings.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the 'crooners' will ever come back. I do hope so.
DeleteNat King Cole was a wonderful singer. Just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHe was. His voice was just perfection.
DeleteSuch a great voice, I love autumn leaves, I have 2 plastic dustbin full of them for leafmulch next year. Recently we had our 3 year old granddaughter, we skipped through piles of dries leaves with so much laughter.
ReplyDeleteThere's so much joy to seeing life through a three-year-old's eyes.
DeleteI love those singers. And I also love the colorful leaves while they're still hanging on the trees. Our drought was so bad this year we had no color just brown leaves and believe me we've been raking and leaf blowing for weeks. Now the leaves are not so romantic.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame about your autumn leaves. I hope when the rain comes, it will be sufficient and not too much.
DeleteThis year the leaves round where we are are particularly beautiful and our dear lab girl loves to swish through them on walks. I love seeing the trees in skeletol form , as the sun goes down and lights up the sky behind them it's one of the compensations of winter.

It changes the landscape, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteOak leaves can be pretty tenacious. Sometimes a few stay withered on the tree for the winter.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why some hang on and how.
DeleteSuch beautiful lyrics! Fall is a such a wonderful time of the year.

DeleteI like the mists and hazy suns of autumn.
DeleteThanks for the earworm this morning.
ReplyDeleteIt could have been worse . . .
DeleteI have lots of autumn leaves and even more from my neighbors due to winds yesterday. If I sang about them, the lyrics wouldn't be safe for a family friendly blog. Seriously, I do like that song.
ReplyDelete🤣
DeleteYou paint a lovely picture with your words
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteVery pretty.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Autumn a lovely season. I was fortunate to have a very enjoyable walk yesterday and came across a lot of Autumn leaves, and with childish delight ended up kicking a few around!
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy reading your words and listening to Nat King Cole ... one of my favourites.
All the best Jan
