Christmas Eve
All images courtesy of Wikimedia CommonsAt the first stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve legend has it that all animals are given the power of human speech for that one special night. So, in homes and stables, fields and forests, animals domestic and wild acknowledge the miracle of Christmas, along with the bees, who sing a hymn at midnight just as Christmas Day breaks.

The origins of this folklore are lost but it is repeated to generations of wide-eyed children who try to stave off sleep so that they may hear the beasts speak.

Oh I wish! I would be out in the woods listening to what they say. I'd love to know.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard the speaking of the animals.
ReplyDeleteLovely, thank you. xx
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know what they say. Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteChristmas Eve is celebrated on December 24, the day
ReplyDeletebefore the Christian holiday of Christmas...
In most European countries, Christmas gifts are
exchanged on Christmas Eve...
European and North American churches hold services,
some of which begin at midnight...
And yes, when l was a boy we all went to midnight mass..
Which lasted some two hours...then we went home...all
singing..'What it is to be Merry' Hic! HeHe! :).
We then all gathered in the front room, Father Christmas
would then pop in...and gave everyone presents...l remember
a hell of a noise up above, Dad said it was just the reindeer
shuffling about..! :).
So, as kids we played with our toys...time went on..no sleep,
by the time we turned round it was Christmas dinner time!
And the rest of the day, the grown ups slept...and we kids,
did what we kids did...HaHa! Can't remember now...! :(
