Every day’s a special day

Every day’s a special day

Did you know that yesterday was National Ballpoint Pen Day? Among other things it was also Magna Carta Day and Beer Day Britain, two inconsequential occasions and one historically important.

Today is National Fudge Day and International Day of Family Remittances. One is for fun and the second underlines something of vital importance.

The International Day of Family Remittances is observed annually on 16th June. It marks the financial contributions from over 200 million migrants to their families to improve their lives. Half the remittances go to rural areas. Though they may be of small value individually, they are vital to the developing world and are three times larger than official global assistance for development. They help to educate children and provide medical care.

  1. We learned something important today. It is the 'three time large' bit that impressed us most.

  3. I am not sure about this one. Another charity that does good work overseas? I know immigrants here already send direct money to family back 'home', that is transferring money from a rich country to a poorer country.

    1. It is about individuals sending money home to support their families, so I suppose it is charity in that sense.

  4. The ‘sending money home’ from those who left was a large part of what allowed Irish families to cope during hard times. A little was put to one side to save for another persons fare so they too could ‘look after the family’

  5. I grew up in a rural area where the migrants came in to pick crops. And today I see more migrants working restaurants and carpentry. I know they have families thousands of miles from here and hope their remmitance makes it to their families. But I had no idea of the impact financially it was.

    1. For some it may mean the difference between eating and starving.

  6. Have never heard of all these days, I read about a strawberry day, but nothing else. There was a women's day, and a secretary day, but I don't remember when. For me all days are the same. Money for migrants or Ukrainians I am not sure that it arrives really there were it should be !

  7. If it goes directly from the migrant to the recipient it should be okay.
