Out of ideas
. . . so I’m reposting a post from nine years ago. It was a response to a prompt from a meme that is no longer active.
Tell me a
story
Tell me a
story
Of once
upon a time,
When magic
ruled the earth.
Tell it
short or tell it long,
Make it trivial
or sublime,
Write it sad
or full of mirth.
Knit a
fabric of surprise,
Blend in
truth and dreams or lies,
But make it real somewise.
Make me
laugh or make me cry,
Tell me tales
that make me sigh,
Bid me
always question, ‘Why?’
Create for
me delicious fright
Or make
me gasp in sheer delight,
And make
sure wrong is never right.
Catch a child’s
mind when you can,
Always make
your stories fun,
Then,
storytellers, you have won!
I think this was a great idea for verse but after nine years are there any ways in which you might change or improve it? For me the first four tercets work better than the last two.
ReplyDeleteImpatience and knowing when to stop have always been my problems!
DeleteThis is wonderful! I usually write my posts a week in advance and unfortunately, I'm suddenly out of ideas for next week.
ReplyDeleteLook back to some of your old posts, maybe about KC!
DeleteThere is nothing wrong with reposting from 9 years ago. The world has changed drastically since then, your old readers have probably moved into old age homes and your own history is moving on. Mind you, that is the beauty of a history or literature blog; nothing is throw outable.
ReplyDeleteSome of my old readers are still reading and writing, some have disappeared altogether. That's life!
DeleteLove it! I hadn't discovered your wonderful blog nine years ago so it's new to me
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharon.
DeleteNothing to do with your post, but I recall that storytelling is an art — an art that I do not possess.
ReplyDeleteI think you're mistaken - you can definitely spin a story!
DeleteI like that and obviously wasn't here nine years back so I am glad you shared it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bob!
DeleteA good story teller is a weaver of words, a maker of tapestries for our ears.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very poetic way of putting it - I love 'a maker of tapestries for our ears!'
DeleteI like it! I've thought about reposting some old stuff but finding the ones I want isn't easy.
ReplyDeleteJust dive in - I like your writing!
DeleteI love this - it dances with sparkling ideas.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lyssa.
DeleteTell me a story, tell me a story……tell me a story then I’ll go to bed. An old Frankie Laine song now an ear worm. Bedtime for me is in 4hrs - wonder if I’ll lose it before then
ReplyDeleteFirst time I’ve seen it - but there’s no harm in republishing older posts. I’ve been doing the same recently (with more in the pipeline)
I remember Frankie Laine, but not that song. I like reading other people's memories and memoirs, and that's what older posts are.
DeleteI like that.
ReplyDeleteYou are a good storyteller; something I aspire to but need more practice.
Kind of you to say, but I think you definitely have it in you. I used to find sites that had prompts useful, but they're hard to find these days. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough! Prrobably!
DeleteWhoops! Probably!
DeleteNot a visitor 9 years ago, so thank you for sharing again, I like it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marlene. I think we should all repost from time to time.
DeleteMy next post is an update of and old post.
DeleteI look forward to it!
DeleteThis is great. It's a Lovely story. I need some folks a few years back that actually went to a storytelling learning session. I'm not sure what else to call it. But they learned how to tell stories much better. I don't think you need any training at all.
ReplyDeleteWe all learn from each other and sometimes we discover different ways to approach things.
DeleteIt's good to repost sometimes, there's always new readers who never saw it in the first place.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I think. Perhaps we should start a tradition - 'Post what you were doing this time ten years ago' or something!
DeleteNothing wrong with me running old material, especially when it’s good stuff like that poem. Even good storytellers recycle material
ReplyDeleteIt can be quite refreshing to look back and also surprising!
Delete"Tell me the old, old story"... That's an old hymn title we use to sing when I went to church in England. I often look back in Blogger and revisit a post of mine.
ReplyDeleteI remember that hymn!
Deletewild clapping, standing ovation. WE love it!!!! we all love a good story. Beau sits and stares at me without moving when I tell him a story....
ReplyDeleteDogs are the best audience!
DeleteI'm rather new to your blog as well - but also think that good poems as well as good stories are worth repeating! :)
ReplyDeleteI like to read what other people wrote some time ago, too.
DeleteThis post made me smile big, something I needed after the trauma of the past few days that I watched on TV and wrote about on my blog. Thanks for this, it's just lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you; that's so kind!
DeleteWell, as I wasn't visiting your blog nine years ago this was new to me and I enjoyed it ... so thank you.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
It's strange how we come across other blogs. Like a lot of people, I suppose, I look at commenters on other blogs and try them out.
DeleteIt's new to me, as I wasn't following your blogs nine years ago. In fact, I hadn't even started blogging back then ... xxx
ReplyDeleteEverything's new to someone, somewhere!
DeleteI love this! As a former storyteller, now retired, it was always a challenge to reach each audience, to entice them into the magic of the stories and songs. Sometimes I really miss that.
ReplyDeleteI really admire professional story-tellers. The nearest I came to it was teaching small children!
DeleteI always admire the manner in which masterful storytellers and novelists concoct the most mesmerizing tales
ReplyDeleteIt is an art. Some people are natural raconteurs.
DeleteI love the poem. Well worth sharing again.
ReplyDeleteI also find myself trying to think of ideas. I think you do a great job of finding interesting topics.
Thank you! Sometimes the ideas come thick and fast, other times, it's a struggle. Sound familiar?
DeleteI wasn't around your blog nine years ago, so if you hadn't outed your reposting I would have been clueless.
ReplyDeleteThat's the trouble - I never can keep my trap shut!
DeleteThank you for sharing this post, Janice. I didn't know you when this was first posted so it is new to me.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I get that 'out of ideas' feeling and panic. Silly really, I know!
I always find your posts thoughtful, informative and amusing. Even your 'out of ideas' days are good to read.
Have a good week.
Thank you, Beverley - so kind. 😃
