 Rainbows

We don't often see rainbows, but we have seen a couple recently.

One afternoon, rain lashed while the sun attempted to counteract the dark clouds. Together, sun and rain conspired to bring forth a dramatic rainbow. The photographs were taken from the patio door into the garden and have not been edited.

A few days later, more rain fell in a dispirited, half-hearted manner. The result was a wishy-washy sky with an uninspiring bow. The clouds promised more precipitation, but did not deliver.

Note the anemometer on the pole to the left of the tree. There's also a rain gauge there, which gets blocked occasionally!

The netting on the right-hand side of the photograph is a Heath Robinson affair, designed to allow air to enter and prevent small humans from escaping.

  1. The first photos display a dramatic sky, the second rather foreboding.

    1. 'The end is nigh' we could have said . . . but didn't.

  2. That is indeed dramatic and the colours are almost surreal. The one you called wishywashy is the more traditional rainbow.

    1. On any other day, the second day's rainbow would have been its usual gift.

  3. Rainbows always seem magical to me. The first one is quite spectacular.

    1. I always wanted to find the end of the rainbow. Didn't we all? 🌈

  4. I can't remember the last time I saw a rainbow. I'm not sure if that is because they are so rare or because I just don't happen to be outside looking at the sky when they occur. I agree with Stephanie - they always seem magical.

    1. We can rely on seeing sunrise and sunset, but rainbows are less predictable, in UK anyway.

    1. It rained quite hard, but not for long enough!

  6. We saw only 1 little rainbow in Illinois in the 35 years we lived there. Here in Hawaii, we see rainbows a LOT. However, we're having a little drought right now which is not good. Therefore... sigh... no rainbows. But winter rainy season is coming so I'm expecting to see more. I'm so glad you got to enjoy one now.

    1. How lovely to be able to see rainbows so frequently, though unfortunate that you are lacking rain at present.

  7. Beautiful rainbows, thank you.💖

  8. The rainbows are beautiful, as is the sight of rain. Yorkshire photos have been showing small rivers and becks flowing down the hill sides with great gusto as the rain begins to fill our largely empty reservoirs.

    1. I hope the rain will now fall in sensible measures and refill the reservoirs. It's worrying to see dry stream beds and depleted ponds.

  11. I love dramatic skies. The contrasts between the darkened foliage and the splash of colour make a perfect composition. Number 1 and 2 are stunning.

  12. I always feel a sense of magical wonder when I see a rainbow. One of my best memories is being a kid, driving with my family along the A5 past Llangollen and seeing a triple rainbow over the hills. Thank you for sharing.

  14. What a glorious sight these rainbows are. I don't usually see them here only because there's so many trees in the way. And also this time of year we've had no rain now for about 6 weeks. I'm glad you're getting some after the dry spell.

  21. That rainbow with the colourful clouds really is spectacular! I get to see rainbows relatively often, but never quite like that one, and more often than not they look even less remarkable in the photo.

  22. last week, Beau and I walked under the middle of a rainbow like your 4th photo down. I love the first two and have never seen any like them, not even photos. awesome shots and wish I had seen that one with my own eyes

  26. Those first two photos are very dramatic! I happened to spot a rainbow while I was sitting at my desk the other day, but by the time I got my camera it had faded ... what a shame! xxx

  27. Our rainbow skies are normally like your wishing washing photos. The first several are absolutely outstanding and I give them six stars out of five.
